I went and picked up at his house. He lets you pick whatever pieces you want. Its pretty cool...getting it at wholesale prices! I heard there is a new fish store in Boca up off Clintmore but I have yet to get up there with enough time to check it out! have you heard of it or been there yet?? Also, you HAVE to go check out Big Als....University and McNabb in Lauderhill...AMAZING....you'll fall in love with the Shark tank! 5,000G!!

I think he was in Miramar or Pembroke Pines...I forget which one....but sign up and send "liverockboy" a msg and see what he has in stock if ur interested. Doesn't the barrier reef have the cheap base rock too? I haven't been there in a few months so I dunno what they have anymore!

o ok thanks. how long does it usually take for a tank's amonia and nitrates to spike? (i have a 24 nano dx with live sand and rock if that helps)

if you go to the barrier reef and get the live bacteria, frytzme, I think its called, it will help speed up the process. some people say it skipps the process all together, but I added it while I had the shrimp in there and within a week the shrimp was gone and everything evened right out. IME, it worked really well....just an idea! I still let mine cycle 2 more weeks with just a chromis in it though....

Adding things to your tank to speed up the cycle is not recomended and may cause your tank to crash a couple months later. You need to build up your different bacterias so you have a well balanced bioload.

i'll probably add a raw shrimp but then just let it cycle naturally. Can I add any turbo snails or cleanup crew or anything untill its done cycling? u said u had a chromis. id like to add a few crabs or snails (unless it would be fatal).

Definately no inverts until the cycle is done. Not many things will live during a cycle. Most fish die or are severely harmed.

I cycled mine with 10 pounds of live rock...about 20 hermits with just that for a week....then added a shrimp in a filter bag hanging in the tank...and week 2 I added 20 lps rock, the frytzme and the following week when the shrimp was gone and everyone was pretty much to zero, I added 2 chromis....and all this was back in Jan when it set it all up...and no problems since.

hmmm..strange...all my blue leg hermits lived through the cycle...even a few snails...what works for some may not work for all....

I say no snails...they shouldn't be needed till the cycle is over. Test every other day to every 3 days. While you are waiting, get a book from the library and read. Conscientious Marine Aquarist by Robert Fenner will teach you everything you need to know.

get a few hermits! they can't hurt...they are usually like 2 for 1$ or just go find a rocky area on the beach and find then urself! thats what I did....I never even knew they were local till I saw someone selling a big bucket of them one day to Fish Paradise! that is also why I added them during the cycle too so if they had any thing that would get my fish sick, it would die during the cycle...
