Yeah, is it the rates that stay high because thats the last biproduct of ammonia or is it the ites? I forget. Or is it different in SW and they all have to be at 0 cuz i know theres bacteria that breaks down ammonia into trates or trites then another bacteria that breaks down the trites or trates then one or the other is really a less harmful form or ammonia so it peeks? I dont know haha

Ammonia....nitrites....nitrates....Fish can survive with some nitrates...ammonia and nitrites are toxic to them...zero all around would be the ultimate goal

The help of your fuge and a good water change schedule, a good clean up crew, a low bioload of fish, and a good feeding technique that does not add too much food that it sinks to the bottom or the rock to rot before the fish can eat it all.

IMO how many fish you should have in your aquarium is a decision that should be made on the fish of course, your husbandry, and you filtration. It is all about the fish of course, and the bioload / biofiltration capability you have.

LOL...I didn't know what detrius was at first either...
You an try to do a 10% or even 20% (what are we talking 1 or 2 g's)water change....then test it the next day and see....
You really need ammonia to be 0...and nothing else to creep up for a week at least
