It does look like a heart ... I think she is saying that she loves you and would like for you to reach in and pet her!

It seems like Lola did not come away unscathed
From her encounter with the crab. If you look at her two leaves like antenna (yes they are in fact antenna) you will see the one on her right is a complete oval while the one on her left has a piece taken out of it. I guess the crab did not go quietly into the night

how do you feel a two or three inch mantis would do in a 75g with a miniatus grouper
well it seems you have or will have an aggressive fish tank, that being said and the fact that the tank may be a little small for an adult miniatus IMO the mantis will we able to elude the grouper what specific matins are you considering

im working out a deal with my older brother that if he buys the stuff i will maintain the tank(feeding, water changes ect,), he has really let that tank go downhill, ill post pics in a sec.
I was just wondering because i think mantis shrimp look cool, and my lfs has a two or three inch one for 25 bucks.
For future fish, none in mind, so it would be the shrimp and the grouper, and if it has to be, ill get rid of the shrimp if i wanted another fish.
The grouper is about 6-8in, and the tank fits him nicely now and he is not really growing for some reason (weve had him for almost three years).

I finally got to the end! Awesomeness Joe! When you said you were going to build a Mantis tank months ago I said this is going to be an entertaining thread. Very much so.
Lolas beautiful! I want to get a mantis now! what an interesting creature. the info in the begininning of the thread was awesome. what are those small flag like antenna for? they look like some sort of display appendage. Do you leave the shells from the crab pieces in the tank? Id like to read some more if anyone has any suguestions....
I want one. Nicely done Joe.

Excellent question my new friend the antennules which you ask about are in fact fascinating and beautiful, they resemble a peacock feather. These antennules are sensitive to water-born odors and turbulence. The leaf like flap is fringed with hair like setae, to amplify the sensitivity of the antennules. Dr Caldwell states that in some species they reflect polarized light which other mantis can see and they in fact may communicate with each other in this manner
BTW I know that mantis eat their shells after a molt as a way of getting calcium. I am interested in if she will eat the shell from the crab she killed

Did Lola eat her victems shell? any new pics? Has Lola shown any agressiveness towards you? does she use her antennules for a threatining display? I wish DiscoveryHD would do something about Mantis Shrimp.

No she left the shell put picked it clean. She has not shown any aggressiveness toward me, but I have not put my hand in a position that would threaten her. As far as a threatening display, what I have learned is that a common threat display is the meral spread. The mantis elevates its thorax and spreads wide its antennules, antennules scales, raptorial appendages and peraeopods. This display I have read is quite dramatic as a brightly colored depression (meral spot) is displayed.
I will take a pic tonight with i feed her (krill)
