hey joe,how is the damsel doing in there with lola?
Still doing great i think he will have more of a problem with the jewel damsel that i will introduce this week from SWF
Having clams and linguine for Good Friday ( a catholic thing) I decided to give Lola a treat. I placed a small clam among the rubble in front of her burrow to see what she would do. Nothing happened until Saturday when I could not find the clam. I assumed the clam buried itself in the sub straight. I did not think it was in the burrow. I feel I would have heard her trying to break it open if it was. This morning I found the clam in the condition you see below at the back entrance to her burrow. What is interesting is the clam only shows two small stress marks on the shell which may or may not have been there before. The only thing I can deduce is that she not only clubs her pray but may have caught the clam gaping and forced open the shell and started eating it. I must say she is cleans her plate

FYI my mantis loves large mysis I throw a few in front of the PH is sends them around the tank and she comes out of her burrow and hunts them down

Interesting Lola has always called her burrow home. When I introduced the damsel to the tank it found a home in the crater created under the piece of live rock you see. Lola now regularly goes to that spot and hangs out. It’s as if she is saying to the damsel THIS TANK IS MINE

So beautiful, you have inspired yet another person to look into a mantis tank!
I'm just curious about these guys strength, it's obviously amazing......there is alot or reads about there thumping strength but it seems their lifting and moving strength is overlooked. Seems to me like these guys could compete with carpenter ants. I'm just curious would like to read something about that.

Pictures can not really allow you to see how beautiful their colors are. As for their strength, i agree it seems to be out of proportion to their size. I will see what i can find out.
If you do start a Mantis tank I think you will enjoy it.

Golly Joe shes a good lookin gal.
I really would like to start a Mantis tank. Im not sure I should though.
Would you say its fairly simple? More so than keeping coral?
What kind of tank maitnence do you perform on her tank?
I wouldnt need top notch lighting would I? Does it help with the coloring to have higher end lighting as opposed to say compacts?
Do you dose anything or add anything special like Iodine to her tank?
Thanks again in advance Joe!

You will love keeping a peacock mantis. It is the simplest IMO species specific tank to keep> much easyer then corals. I just do a weekly water change. You need the simplest lighting (florescent) unless you want corals in your tank. (I don’t) I do not as per Rick Caldwell’s suggestions dose anything

I'm really tempted to get a nano tank for Corals and such and convert my 55 gal to a Mantis tank. So tempted in fact that its a good thing I don't have the money at the moment. Because I think I would.
Would you recommend ordering a Peacock through the mail? I have yet to see any at any of the LFS's in Phoenix. And I defiantly want a Peacock.
Would I still use a skimmer and my sump system? And that green piece of LR you have! holy crap thats awesome! Where can I get some of that?!?!
Man I am so close to starting this. I don't know why I'm so fascinated with these critters. Ive never even seen one in person. I just cant believe someone WOULDN'T want to keep one. They seem really really interesting.
Gotta talk myself out of this for one more week.

Ok you lucky dog If I was going with a 55g I would get some PC lighting some real nice rock work some low light corals and your peacock. You can IMO add some fish as long as you target feed your mantis. My e-mail is NaplesFl101@aol.com e-mail me and I can direct you to what I believe to be the best Mantis on line store in the US

Thanks a million Joe. Ill shoot ya an Email. I'm starting a list of things to purchase next Wednesday( payday).
In your Opinion (I don't really want to buy a nano for my coral) should I just trade in my blenny and starfish and convert my tank?
I think Ive pretty much decided this is what I want to do. I know the blenny and starfish, emerald crab and perhaps even the clowns would become food. I would rather not have the blenny and clowns eaten though. Ill try to keep my corals in the tank with future Mr. or Mrs. mantis. How likely is it that you would ever be able to touch Lola? What if you had to put your hand in the tank for some reason?
I'm really stoked about this and have a good feeling about it.

I don't think Lola will ever let me touch her. The size of my hand would represent a threat and she most likely would retreat into her burrow. if she were to strike me it would be if i was not paying attention to what i was doing in her tank and surprised her

Well it’s been a while since I posted anything on my Lola. Actually all was status quo. That was until tonight. It seems my blue damsel is MIA or more like MAE ( missing and eaten)with the absence of a CUC and after a extensive search of the tank all I can say is LOLA has enough of its darting around and had a meal of damsel tonight
