Hey NOOB, I suggest you go and read the stickies at the top of the new hobbyist section and get yourself some good books. IMO this should have been done before setting up this tank. What the heck is wrong with you.
Anyway I believe your answer is in the lost florida joe thread!!!!!

Wait a minute here spunky.
I did not come here to be told read any stinking books. I want answers and I want them now. That is why YOU are here is it not. I mean it is your JOB to answer my questions and not give me any lectures. BTW if the thread is lost how do i find it ??????

BTW can someone tell me when I will know my cycle is over?
Ima very disapointed in you Joe, everyone knows that you only have to cycle tanks for coral - fish can obviously be added to start a cycle. Since you are keeping a shrimp here, and its not coral, the whole cycle thing is irrelivant
! I would think that someone with as many posts as you have would know that?!

ok, I probably missed it somewhere, but why prebuild a tunnel for the little guy? Are you just trying to prevent it from tunneling on its own?

Good point Cran on the rock placement. Peacocks are my first chose now but they do have there down side. Susceptible to bad molts and shell disease. I will have to supplement with iodine to add in molting. BTW what did you use for lighting? I want to go on the dusky side.

Hey Joe, just FYI - most of the bad molts are reported by people who dose Iodine...
I'm just sayin'
They do not require Iodine to molt, they molt to get rid of the Iodine. If there's excess Iodine they may molt prematurely. No harm with NSW levels of Iodide and Iodate for sure but don't add it just for the crustacean.
Are you looking to get a smasher or a spearer? The spearers scare me.
Mine enjoyed whacking the heater when the light came on so I painted over the light.

Just an update. this is where i stand with the Joe/Renee stone PVC burrow

this is my dog keeping me company as I work on the tank. He can hardly contain his excitement

To Randy the mantis is a natural burrower. I want to entice him to call a spot home where i can observe him looking out of his burrow hence giving him an already made one.
FYI leaning toward peacock
Bang. My problem is, if they are susceptible to bad molts then iodine will help them separate from the old exoskeleton. BUT to much iodine will cause frequent molts which may be just as bad

I can't see the pics at work (dreaded firewall).
Are you planning on having two openings in the artificial cave? In their natural habitat they usually do. I believe they benefit from it as well.

yes Bang i would be thankful if you took a look at the pics when you get home. the fitting on the pvc is not glued on yet are you suggesting when i attach the other piece of PVC on the rock i should tie them into each other

From what I have read , yes they need 2 doors. My PVC is 2 elbows and a straight piece. This way he can go in on one side of the rocks and come out the other. If he wants to close it off , he has the option of pulling some rock rubble in with him. I read that if they come to aa "end" in their home they try to break through...guess they feel cornered in
....still lookin for my clown mantis..arrrrrr

He would prefer if the holes didn't come out on the same side... like both the holes in the rock are pointing forwards.... bring the tube out through the back or side somewhere. If you can make a turn in it, that would be super great because it keeps it darker. Any chance of you using black PVC? Again, it helps with keeping it dark.
You can give him 2 tunnels to utilize the second hole.
I've never dosed iodine. I did loose the ciliata to shell rot (one of the conditions which causes them to become caught in their molt), which he developed after a fire occurred behind his tank. He lived for a couple of years after that and we worked really hard to get him to molt the rot away..... but it didn't happen.... he got caught in his molt.

Joe,
back in the old daze, i used that same stone in my FO setup and never had any trouble.
HOWEVER, if you're wondering about whether it's a Ca-based stone, put a couple of drops of vinegar on it. if it fizzes, it's Ca-based.
