Nice job so far on the sumps Brandan
Looks great!!
Are you planning on doing any kind support structure around the glass?
I have some extra glass that I am going to use to brace all of the edges, and I will also be installing baffles as soon as Luke gets the extra glass over to me.

look guys, I didn't mean to offend anyone. After re-reading my post, i realize it sounded somewhat childish. I wasn't trying to attack you Acrylic. I honestly thought my words sounded respectful to you and the entire community here. Re-reading, they sound a little...less than what i thought.
Anyway, to just back my earlier point up, I had been reading the whole thread front to back and it was all very fresh in my mind, and several questions were asked by you that I already knew the answers too. I dont remember them now, and honestly it doesn't matter. I was out of line and Bronco doesn't mind, so really, I should shut my mouth. I've done more to hijack than anyone else now. Sorry for that. Truly.
Also, I would PM my apology, but I'm not afraid of being open when I feel I messed up, or taking heat for it. Dish it out. I can take it, especially when I deserve it.
So sorry everyone. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

hey Bronco, just wanted to follow up with some questions if you dont mind.
how do you feel about a tank that's 2 feet shorter than yours, but 18 inches taller? I want to build a tank that's 8' x 3' x 4'tall. I want to use 1/2" tempered but am worried that it's too high for that glass that's not at least 3/4". Do you think it'd be ok? Also do you feel that if it wouldn't be ok, would busting it down to 40" tall (rather than 48") would make a difference? I'd also like to consider making it 4' deep. (so 8x4x4 or 8x4x40") but then that gets into monster sizes and would require serious bracing. I want to go as big and wide as possible but still keep the overall feel of your design. I mean you didn't even use screws through most of it! You even joined 2 pieces together. I seriously applaud you for doing what everyone said you shouldn't.
so if you were building another tank and wanted it at least 40" tall, how would you do it and what would your overall dimensions be? any help you offer is beyond appreciated. Thank you either way!

go read the thread turkey! I'll do short answers...it is 500gallon, will be toal 600-700 gallons after the sumps are up and running. stocklist will be hopefully as follows...
school bannerfish
school red stripe anthias
ribbon eel
achilles tang
gold rim/white cheek tang maybe
pair leopard wrasses
maybe couple pairs of clowns depending on eel

thanks, if you went with a higher glass then i would definitely go with 3/4" most likely...maybe even 1" if you go super high..it just depends how you make it(if doing wood)....i personally don't really care much for a super deep or high tank since you can only see so much...it just seems like wasted space if i have 4' back but have rock and corals etc in the way that i cant see the fish in the back ya know...if I went with something deep like that I'd probably make it a lagoon for sharks or rays or something like that...thats just my opion...the length of the tanks gives you so much more to see....if i did 40" tall, which wouldn't be terrible in my case, cause the glass view would be about 36" then...I'd go to 3/4 to be safe..and my length would be the same...not sure I'd do tempered though just because i don't like the idea of if a crack does occur, that the entire glass spiders....meaning it can leak from who knows where and possibly drain completely unless its a layered one...but where if my glass cracks, its very possible it could drain only partially giving me time to save anything in the tank.

I would not do a tank that tall if it were me. I think I'd do no taller than 30in, 30X48X96, would be a very nice look. Depth, with enough height to provide shadowing, yet easily light the SB. Either way, I'd do 20mm (.78in) minimum. But no hijacking here.

no center brace? for the glass you mean? the height is the more important item than length if i recall correctly...but like i said youd for sure want 3/4" ..maybe 1"

Have fun sleeping at night with 20mm glass. I would HIGHLY recommend calling a reputable tank builder to confirm the glass thickness on a tank of that magnitue. To do a tank that is 8" long, I could see something with 24mm glass or greater MAYBE; but to do two more panes of glass that are over 3" long, that is where I would worry. You will have a TREMENDOUS amount of pressure that will be placed at the bottom depths of the tank with a height of 40+inches. Read into Bernoulli laws of fluids a little, you will soon see how great the pressure rises in relations to the depth of your fluid.
