You guys are kind of missing the point. imo the NBA does something different than any other league, people almost follow the stars more than the teams... And this fits right in. Professional sports needs promotion. These guys make most of their money off of self-promotion. (well at least the huge names like tiger, Lebron, MJ you know the top 1 or 2 guys from the league) So all this hubub surrounding this, is exactly what the NBA wants and needs. Plus it turns into a revenue generating mechanism for the team, the player (who donated alot of last nights revenue to the boys and girls club not counting the screen time that charity got) Basketball season is over, and what are we doing talking basketball, (and even more amazing you have me talking basketball which is a testament to the success this firestorm)
In the 90's, the NBA was the most popular professional sport, yes even more so than the NFL....Do you actually think MJ would have ever done something like this?

Frankly I'm surprised MJ didn't do some sort of look who miami got their hanes on commercial... I dunno, had it been today, who knows. I don't think Lebron is going to play double A baseball for Miami's farm team...

MJ did pull this same 'stunt' when he 'un-retired' and played that pathetic two seasons with the Washington Wizards. And as stdreb mentioned, his little Minor League Baseball career was nothing more than a promtional stunt to make him more money.

I'm not that cynical, but my point was MJ did some off the wall stuff too.
Personally I'm glad he did, it proves that even the greatest athlete in NBA history couldn't cut it in the MLB...

this is awesome!
Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;
As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.
This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his "decision" unlike anything ever "witnessed" in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.
Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.
The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.
There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.
You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.
You have given so much and deserve so much more.
In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:
"I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE"
You can take it to the bank.
If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our "motivation" to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.
Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.
Sorry, but that's simply not how it works.
This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown "chosen one" sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And "who" we would want them to grow-up to become.
But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called "curse" on Cleveland, Ohio.
The self-declared former "King" will be taking the "curse" with him down south. And until he does "right" by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.
Just watch.
Sleep well, Cleveland.
Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day....
I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:
DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue....
Dan Gilbert
Majority Owner
Cleveland Cavaliers

I think he's still celebrating and trying to scoop up some of those new season tickets that I'm sure they inflated 150% after the 'Three Musketeers' announced their intentions to play for the Heat.

Maybe MiaHtlvr is part of James' 25 room entourage in Miami and can't get internet in his room. After all James did set his ego aside, wouldn't that mean giving his posse standard rooms with no wifi?

WOW, I knew Gilbert had made some statements, but that letter is something else, particularly the guarantee that Cleveland will win a title before Lebron...I hope they do, but I would have to think they are a lock to miss the playoffs next year for sure.

I'd like to have a ticket for the first game in Cleveland that the Heat play there. Wonder how many fans will get kicked out for throwing trash onto the court when he's first announced at the beginning of the game. If James were smart, he'd hire extra security for his house in Cleveland. I imagine it'll get 'tagged' in the next couple days.

I do too, problem is might be about as competitive as the Lakers Clippers rivalry.
That Gilbert is one bitter dude, he is probably about to be MIA in the Amazon looking for a witch doctor to put a curse on "the chosen one".

I'm thinking multiple purpose. Stick pins in it, hang it, burn it

I just watched some idiots from Miami being interviewed, and I am speaking of idiots, not implying all Miamians are idiots. Anyway they are all giddy saying James is going to bring the economy back and revitalize the city. It's just a game for god's sake.

I was out playing Bar Poker, and they had ESPN on the TV. They had some stupid news conference with the three of them answering questions. The sound wasn't up, but exactly what could they be talking about? Then at the end, they zoom in to each one of them as they pull out their Mont Blanc pens and sign their contracts. This media circus is getting ridiculous.
They also were running trailers saying that Shaq and Allen Iverson may be in talks with the Heat. So all the old-timer rejects are now looking at the Heat for that last 'Free Ride' chase for another ring? this just validates why the NBA isn't worth following anymore.

It was like a welcome party thing, they basically asked the same questions that have been asked a million times in the last few days. They had LeBron answer some questions in Spanish, which was kinda funny/kinda upsetting.

Yea, the media is pretty much fighting over who will get the scoop on their next addition, esp. if it's someone big. Even though Riley's ego may not fit into the American Airlines arena, he still knows what to do. A.I. would be a terrible choice. Shaq would help win one, maybe two at the most, but not help setup the 6-7 time champion team LeBron promised.
Oh yea, LeBron promised "more then 6 championships" during the event.

Maybe they'll move the games outdoors to Joe Robby Stadium...

I wouldn't want Shaq on a team now. One of the things that made him so awesome was that quick first step which faded with John Kerry's presidential hopes. His bricks are too much of a liability now.
