Is the scroll coral still with you? That one was really beautiful....
Thanks. I still have it, but I don't think it has grown lol. It is very pretty. Trimmed in yellow with yellow polyps that only come out at night! So I can never get a good pic of it. I found one just like it for sale today! Ya know, It's sad thinking about all the coral I lost, esp my yellow tort. I am hoping to replace some stuff next week. I found a beautiful neon green acro that I just gotta have!!!!!
Ya know. I am starting to wonder if the brownish orange algae that I keep getting is actually a form of cyano. It blows off the rocks, and will form a mat on the sand that I can suck out. It dies without light but will come back slowly... Would be nice if I could send a specimen off to be ID'd. I have read that the chemi clean will not touch some of the cyano out there, so I am wondering if I shouldnt try a different brand to see what it will do. This is the last of the pest algae that I need to get rid of lol. Anyways, I am going to a frag swap next weekend and have contacted the guy I got my shawn bennett yellow tort from and I am buying a mini colony of it!! So...I am so glad I can get my favorite acro back in the tank!!!
fragswaps are awesome!! We recently had one here as well. Last Saturday in fact. Good thing about Florida is that we have a several of them in a year!!
Oh yeah, forgot to mention that I really didn't see good results with the aqua vitro salinity salt so I switched back to instant ocean. My corals are coloring up nicely. Maybe there is something to the borate that was discussed awhile back. Lost several acros during the months I used this salt. Coincidence?
I have been going primarily nsw and oh boy... results are phenomenal. I use reef crystals maybe once a month but I see so much in difference it's ridiculous.
And yes, that's very far lol. Where do you live?
So far, I have confirmed the purchases of the yellow tort colony, Tyree pink lemonade, monti undata, lunar eclipse palys, red hornets, meteor shower, and tangelos. Can't wait to see these beauties!! I want to add lots more color to my tank.
Anyway guys, back to the algae. I have narrowed it down. I think its either cyano or diatoms. I am wondering if the dry marine sand I mixed in with the live sand when I set this tank up could be releasing silicates?? I think I will replace my entire sand bed so I can rule that out before I try a different red slime remover. So, tomorrow I will replace half of it, and then in three to five days I will replace the rest. Any thoughts?

I doubt that is the case.
I am at a loss on what it is then. Had it since the first few months of starting this tank up. The dry sand is the only thing I can think of that could be feeding it if its diatoms. It is a golden orange, coats the rocks and sand, blows off the rocks easily. Had the lights out on the tank for 4 days. It came back on day 3 of lights on.
You have been battling this algae for a long time luv, I hope you get rid of it once and for all!!!
You can do it!!
Btw, which zoa is your avatar? Kinda looks like purple death and it isn't. I love it!
Yeah, I have been researching what it could be. I am currently reading about calothrix a form of cyano. It resembles dino a lot! Makes me wonder if I have had this all along and not dinos. My avatar is of joker zoas.
OMG... I want it badly... My wife loves purple zoa and I would love to get it for her.. Gotta look around now she's been a trooper with battling her depression and she deserves a nice surprise.
Thanks Luv!! I will look into it!!
On a suggestion, have you thought about doing 90% water change with nsw? I was talking to my friend who has been in the hobby for decades and he recommended that. See if there's a company that delivers NSW for good price in your area and go with that for a bit. You can't do a huge change like that with synthetic but with nsw you can just keep your eye open on the temperature.
Over here, they charge $100 for up to 300 gallon and my friend has 190g with 100 gallon tank outside and does monthly 90% water change.
Getting back to the point, syphon everything while water is being drained and get it out of your system once and for all naturally.
