I'm sorry to hear about your mom.
I read this whole thread, it's so awesome! I can't believe how big Gingi is. I used to work at the Shedd Aquarium when I lived in Chicago, and one of our Peacocks actually broke one of our aquarist's thumbs! They are so strong.
Okay, so I watched that emerald crab vs. peacock video (which made me nauseous) but what makes that clicking noise? Is it from its claws or whatever? And do you put your hand in the tank??
Thank you.
Yeah, they are strong little buggers. I'm not a big fan of the carnage between a mantis and live food, so I feed live the least amount as possible (no offense to shogun, the poster of the video, he has a beautiful mantis
). The clicking is from their appendages when it hits something. They are like little mallots, that bend at a point. I do put my hand in the tank, but not as much as I used to. I used to be able to have my hand near her and she wouldn't care, now she has been super fiesty and I have a hard time putting a scraper in to clean the glass without her clinging to it (she likes to take rides on the magnet glass cleaner too
).

jsut wanted to say thanks for the great thread...just got a new 12g aquapod and have been researching what i want to stock it with...does anyone know if this is even an option for me....love the looks and activity of them. Also how easy are they to take care of...any special requirements. Been into SW for about a year and a half now. Would be getting some help from my brother who is a prof. aquarist but is also in the military so he cant help me all the time... any info is greatly apperciated.

there are quiet a few mantis that would work in your 12 . A peacock would out grow it but a smithii or a wernearra would be perfect .

thats one cool mantis sexyshrimp. Do you stick your hand in the tank? im guessing you do from your posts... doesnt it smash you or anything? especially when youre trying to take its food away?
My LFS has a mantis for sale... its about 6" long..... its white with black patterns... sort of like a black n white tiger...
wasnt labeled.. just said mantis....
anyone got a name?

I agree with Crash, a N. Wennerae or a G. Smithii would be perfect for a 12 gallon. We have our N. Wennerae in our 12 gallon aquapod and it is more than enough room for him. A Peacock would not have near enough room to move about in a 12 gallon. They are extremely active, Gingi is only about 3 1/2 - 4 inches right now, and she fully utilizes her 20 long (footprint of a 30 gal.). The only issue would be is that you like the activity of the mantis, and activity level is hit or miss with the two species recommended for your tank size. Monty is only active occassionally, and he is a quick little bugger when we do get to see him in full length. He doesn like to stick his front half of his body out and stare at me while I stare at him
Any other questions, feel free to ask.

Yeah, I stick my hand in the tank, but not too much lately. She has been a little calmer since I think she is going to be molting, so that gave me a chance to scrape the front of her tank a bit (what the magnet couldn't get). She hasn't smashed my hand, yet
I'm pretty careful when I put my hand in there. Sometimes I have Justin be my lookout if she is being really active and I can't keep an eye on her.
The one at your lfs I thought may be a P. Ciliata by the coloring, but if the one they have is 6", then it couldn't be it since they only get to be a little under 4 inches full grown. I will do a little more searching and see if I can find anything for you.

thanks, i think thats it... if so... that mantis gets way too big for a 29 gallon tank.. maybe not such a good idea..

lol, of course the one they have is the largest of all stomatopods, and it needs a sand bed depth twice it's length, would be interesting to have though.

I think its funny that that particular mantis gets huge, and needs an extremely deep sand bed. And all the store said was "mantis". Im sure you could have bought it and they wouldnt have said a thing!

And most people don't research before they buy something on top of fish stores being completely uninformative. Gotta love fish stores

Most lfs have no clue about what kind of mantis they have . Its more than likely a hitch hiker on some LR .

I know, but most LFS's would sell the mantis to someone no questions asked with no problem.
