Hi Jaysonl,
The starfish in my tank is a red sea star..Fromia milleporella. I have caught some heat having one of these in my tank but its been there for almost 6 months now and still going. Apparently they cant eat or wont eat anything other than algea and a 29 gal tank is too small for them to survive in because it doesnt have the amount of algea growth necessary for them to survive. But this is a quote I got from trusted place in regards to feeding one of these starfish, "If there is insufficient algae growth in the aquarium, the diet should be supplemented with flaked foods, and small pieces of fish or mussel". Knowing this I am going to keep it and see what happens.

I had a probably really stupid question but here goes again, with my new gorgonians(
) if one of the little polyps gets food does it benifit the entire thing or just that polyp? (simialr to the sun or not) I thought that it would benifit the entire thing but wanted to make sure.

Well typically every polyup doesnt need food but just one wouldnt supply the rest of the coral with enough nutrition to sustain its self. But your question being do individual polyups feed the entire specimine or just the branch that it is on? No it feeds the entire coral, but the cool part is if you break off a branch it will survive as a separate entity too.

That is what I thought, and as far as fraggin a branch, when i got mine it had one of its branches broken so i scraped the flesh off the bottom and glued it to a rock. Hopefully they will be fine for a few days till i get the phytoplankton, but I will still be feeding cyclops till then and then feeding both. Everything sound good?
Oh and thanks for all the help PD
I have learned so much from this forum but still have stupid noob questions, but I will probably always have stupid questions.
Learn sumthin new every day

Yep everything sounds good.
No prob with the questions, we all were noobs at one time. Truth be known Im still one myself, I only started with Salt water tanks 6 months ago.
Remember the only stupid question is the one that wasnt asked.

Thanks guys... Im humbled really... but most of the knowledge that I have and give opionions on, has been given to me from alot of people on here. Loads of info from my LFS that employ 2 marine biologist and researching alot on the web too.
BIG-FISH, the corals you mentioned will benifit alot by your trace elements in your water column. Do weekly changes if its a nano tank, 20% and you will replace iodine, calcium among others... test your water peram's too. For additional feedings I use Phyto or zoo plankton once a week a very small quantity, you can also put some cyclops, and mysis in too, alternating between the different types. I do not fresh water dip my corals, I temp acclimate and then plop them in. Hope this helps..

Thanks SUDC I love this avatar, I have another but Im not ready to change it yet.
Jaysonl if you dont mind parting with your Linka in a short time I say give it a go. IMO the biggest difference in the 2 is yours is going to get huge fast. Up to 1 foot in an aquarium, a nano will not be the place for one when it gets that big. The one I have will only get to 5" in an aquarium and it doesnt grow fast. Good Luck.

You are comparing apples to oranges. His starfish CAN be spot fed, YOUR linkia CANNOT

Few quick questions
1) Just how light tolerant are gorgonians?
2) I fed mine the day I got them (when they were open that night) and I think they ate some but have not opend since, how often does yours open?
3) What could I be doing wrong or are they still getting used to their new home even thoughthey already opened?

The gorgonians you got are not light dependant at all they require no light to survive. Typically the polyups will extend when they are hungry, not seeing them at this stage is only an indication that its not hungry and could be indeed still getting acclimated to your tank.
They need a decent amount of flow....how much? well to gauge it in a visual perspective.. sustained flow directly on them, but not so much that it is bent over from the flow. I would say medium to medium high.
I hope this helps... I wouldnt worry about it too much just yet.
