I'm actually picking up my LR tomorrow afternoon, so I'll be setting up my 14 tomorrow evening.
I think I'll try the freshwater dip too on the rocks instead of the hypersalinity. Would the freshwater dip be a little safer than the hypersalinity dip with regards to the potential of die-off? Because I REALLY don't want this tank to go through much of a cycle, if any at all, especially using cured LR, some water from my established tank and LS. What do you think?

Matt : thank's for the 411, I am going to wait before I put the rest in, just in case.
Kat: I think the fresh water dip is better, I just dumped about 3 gal of RO water in a bucket ( enough to totally cover the rock) and let it sit for 1 min. I also turned it around and upside down to make sure the water got in all the holes. Then I put it in the tank. You really won't see much of a cycle if at all, that's what I did with my nano and I just used RO water not established water and I only had a minni cycle. I used live cc not LS in the nano, don't know if that makes a diff. or not
I don't think so. Now with my lighting delay I wonder if I will have more of a cycle now
This stinks!!! could be worse, at least the guy was fast in calling me back and I did get a tracking e-mail today that said fex-ex got my package today at 11:00am so at least it's on it's way!! Good for you, you are going to have sooo much fun tomorrow nite setting up the tank! I wish we lived closer, I would bring over a pizza and help!!! I LOVE setting up tank's, that is the best part. All the planning and prep.......ok I gotta stop now
Dad is still in the hospital, the doc's are going to read his test results tomorrow so maybe he will be comming home if they can figure out what is wrong with him
thank's again for all you'r thoughts and prayers
take pic's of the set-up, I can't wait...I feel like I am getting a new tank too

Clever idea with the stand! However since the tank is supoorted by its' lower rim,and your 2x6 is barely supported bt the cinder blocks,I would stop now, empty the tank and replace the cracked 2x6 before you go any farther. Also consider that the tank may settle a little uneven due to the fact that you have it on a carpeted surface. It will be a minor setback now istead of a major head ache later.

Well, what's the saying? "What's mine is yours and what's yours is mine"? So essentially, you ARE getting a new tank too!

What.... you can't get here by plane and help me set this up???
Well, this is going to be my first time setting up my own tank. I've been spoiled by all my previous tanks. The guys at the LFS came and set them up for me.
But I'm gonna do this one on my own and see where it gets me.

and please do let me know how it goes with your father's tests tomorrow.

Hope you get your lights soon!~

thank's for the thought, but this tank actually has more support than my 55gal had. And all my tanks have been on carpet and it's never been a problem. Also i didn't know what you meant by , suppoted by it's lower rim? aren't all tanks supported by the lower rim?
Also with this tank there is more support per sq. inch than any metal stand on the market, even with 2, 2x6's. I have 18inch of surface support, as opposed to just 1/2 inch around the lower rim on all metqal stands.
Again thank's for the thought i know you are trying to be helpfull, but I think my stand is very sturdy and not going anywhere soon

P.S. the crack don't go all the way thru it's just a surface crack

good job...i just set up my 40g breeder a few months ago...i used a stand i bulit i was going to use a 75g tank as my frag tank but decided to trade for the smaller shorter tank so the sunpod fixture i had would be better suited...and my breeder was drilled out by a glass shop (bought it like that)...keep them the pics comin...

not trying to hijack yours here is a pic of my set up

i got about 10lb's of LR today, 9.00 per lb ouch!!!
at least I got the kid to give me two pieces with 1 small sea urchin in each one
also the owner gave me 25 free nass. snails soooo I guess I can't complain too much!! it's really nice rock, just counting the free snail's brings it down to about 7.25 per lb. I don't know what the urchins are worth, they are pretty small and not real pretty. I will post pic's tomorrow, no batt. for camera!!

i was actually thinking about changing my shevling to be more like yours as i have to redo mine so that when algae gets on the frong of the glass i will be able to clean it....i had it completed in februrary let it cycle for about 6 weeks or so and i put my first coral about 3 or 4 days ago....i tested all my levels made sure they were similar to my tank before i put anything in it though
oh yeah...i was actually wishing my tank wasnt drilled and that i had done what you did and just run a HOB filter so i wouldnt have had to worry about the plumbing and overflow...that was HARD!!!

ok.... I found a crab on one of my new LR's sooooo I started fresh water dippin and 3 more came out of another piece!! Also a really weird very tiny shrimp, still charging the camera so in the mean time I will try to ID him on the net. He is in a bowl right now until I can ID him. Also under one piece there is a large "worm lookin thing"
no head, can't tell what the hell it is. Will also get some pic's of that, maybe later tonite or tomorrow morn. Come on Kat this is better than bar hopping

I guess the grass is always greener.... I do like the fact that i can clean my glass, I did think of that when I was building it, I also am holding off on building the shelves for the other side until i know how I am going to arrange my LR. Like I said I didn't think a wet/dry was a must here b/c I plan on putting lR in and I have the LS so my tank is pretty much my filter too, the owner of my LFS kinda agreed with me.

Ok say hellow to my little friend....

turns out he is a pistol shrimp, aka snapping shrimp. I did some reading and from what I read they are reef safe, but could be aggressive to other small shrimp. But all in all not a bad hitchhikker. Well finally I got a ok critter on my LR
it's about time!!! ooo by the way I did put him/her back in the tank

man i just realized you said you got 10lbs of live rock @ $9/lb...the suggestion i would have made would have been to by dried rock for the lower price and let your cycle process make it live...most places will have base rock or dried rock for around 3 or 4/lb
by the way i just came from your neck of the woods last weekend....my family is from fairbury, IL...and i have a few cousins around the chi-town area, 1 in joliet, 1 in naperville (is that right)

I don't know where Fairbury is but I do live in Joiet, actually I live in un-incorporated will county, but I am close to Joliet. Off I80 & Briggs. Next time you are in the area let me know , I will take you to my LFS they have some really nice stuff. I know I could buy un-cured rock and base rock for like 2-3 per pound, but I am impatiant. I like all the live stuff on these rocks..except for the crab's!! and the color is really nice. Usually the guy gives me some free stuff and it comes out to like 7 per pound, which is still allot of money I know, but when I use that and LS i never get a cycle
I think i have one of these in my 24gal nano , I have been hearing a loud "popping" noise for a long time, I guess these are common hitchhikkers.
