Regarding the blueberry gorgonian... unfortunately, this is usually what happens with them and why they are so difficult, nearly impossible, to keep in our aquariums, and it's a shame, because it's such a beautiful little critter.
I know that they cannot tolerate any type of algae build up or anything else that can smother it because it doesn't have the ability to "brush it off". Even though you moved it to a higher flow area and manually remove the stuff, it will keep coming back and eventually kill the whole thing. I had a small, small frag of one a year ago and it did the same thing until all its little polyps died off and the branches lost its coating and it turned dry as a stick. (well, as dry as a stick could be underwater
)
