My New Refugium

OK, I'll leave the chaeto as is......next question...I just had to clean my (overflow) pre-filters AGAIN....(is this normal) I do this every other day it seems. (You are right I can tell by the water levels in both the tank and the sump)
....Tomorrow morning I am going to do my water change....when I take out the pre-filter tubes to clean them, is there something I have to do to get them to siphon again?

are you taking about your tank

Ummm filters I guess that means they filter. Clean them as often as you must. Don’t blame the filters for doing their job

you are really starting to scare me. when you turn on your return pump you will add water to your DT when the level crests the over flow in your boxed you will introduce water into your refug/sump. or at least I think so

Why am I scaring you? I just don't think you understand what I am asking
I will have to think of a better way to put it

the only overflow boxes you have are in your DT. just turn on the return pump

OK, what's in there is 2 "handfulls" as they call it....for some reason I thought it would look like more...but it looks empty doesn't it?
Hey there,
The chaeto will grow into something more on its own. If you would like more then just let it grow. Once you get it to the size you want then start to harvest it on a weekly basis. If it doesn't grow then I would at least fluff it as it becomes more tight of a ball the inner does not recieve as much light and starts to die. When it dies it releases what it has absorbed for you.(Not good) Also the size will be dictated by constant growth. (If that makes any sense) It can't grow without nutrients.
On the filter floss,
When I ran it I used to have to clean it every two to three days. When I say clean it I mean replace it. I use to use the polyester (Poly fill in matt form) matting from the fabric store as it is a lot cheaper there. I used the 1" stuff.
The overflow,
I haven't been following along that close so,(not to sure of what you have for an OF) If you break the siphon and alter the way it would sit, in a normal power outtage or a pump that has stopped working, then you will have to follow whatever start up procdures you did when you set it up. I hope I explaned it clearly.

Anyway, I hope this helps.

Cool. Some people add a separet pump and a spray bar to make it tumble.
I would recomend turing the cheato to get light all around. Do this every week when you prune it.
JMO, now.

Ok let me try it this way. You are not siphoning water from your tank to your Sump/Refug. Your return pump is introducing water, which crests your overflow box that water Is gravity feed to your sump/refug.From there it goes through its bio filtration and once again gets introduced to your DT. I am going out on a limb here I understand but. JUST TURN ON THE PUMP

I could be wrong but I think meowzer means this thing.

If she removes it (no more water in it) then she will have to suck the air out of the tube to get it going again.

YAYYYY...Yes...that is it...and I can tell you...it does not automatically get siphon going on its own

Ok its way past cocktail time so bear with me. When you shut your sump pump down how far up in your sump does the water go? Keep adding water until you fee comfortable that it will not over flow I think you can use some more water. Also go with caulerpa I will tell you all the pros to it if you want just pm me also you can keep your refug lighnt on 24/7 place some bio balls above the blue filter block
Hey florida joe I in the process of setting up a sum/refug and would love to know all the pros of using caulerpa but I don't know how to pm you or anyone because I am new to this.

Hi
Snakeblitz32 or professor whichever you prefer,
I am writing this thread to you directly because I have seen some of your DIY projects and have been very impressed.
I would like to build a refugium that can also be used as part of the display of the fish tank as well. I have read enough to know it is possible, and has been done, but I have been unable to find any DIY building and set up information. I have a good set up on a 55 gal tank with about 100 lbs of both rock and sand, plus 2 mechanical filters and a protein scammer. I though some think that could help with the nitrites, give me more water capacity for the tank and maybe have a mangrove tree under a grow light etc.
Do you of a good place i can start with this project? As few other fact. 6 months old set up. Very stable 55 gal tank with 100lbs each of live rock from the Gulf and coral sand, 2 mechanical filters and a protein skimmer. 6 fish and lots of young coral.
I have seen some off your ideas on what I think was your web site but have misplaced the URL, could I have it again. via email would be ehealy62@gmail.com.
Thx
