I'm trying to post pics. It my laptop is being so dang slow. I'm on my phone now. Maybe it will work right after a boot up so that I can post pics tonight.
Does anyone know if you can sand primer? It's rustoliem brand

Trim work DONE! woohoo! Next comes the cabinet doors and trim around them. This is a pic of the "unfinished" sanded down stand before primer was painted on.

I went ahead and primed everything in!!! It looks pretty good so far. I think I am going to LIGHTLY power sand the primer so I can get rid of some "streaks" left behind from the brush. I think I will also go ahead and paint it all black before work tomorrow. I think that should give the primer enough time to dry and cure. I can't wait to see some black paint on this baby!
Oh yeah, the center brace in the middle... is removable if need be.
I'm REALLY considering a 110g tall with a center overflow next year. If all goes well, I'll have half my lighting for it with a DIY LED lighting system from the 20g. But anyways, that's way in the future. I'm just happy with the way it's all looking right now!

Thanks. Three coats of black gloss paint is going on today. I'll paint the inside of the stand an "off white" because my wife doesn't like pure white. LOL.
Ill have to get the doors done this week and the paint done, but I can't do anything else until the next paycheck. :(

Looks good. Did you leave yourself enough room at the bottom of the doors to overlap them a little bit? Keep up the good work.

Yes, I did. About 1 1/2" at the bottom for an overlap.I think I am going to screw in a 2x2" board at the bottom for a lip on the back, and then seal it in with chalk and prime it all in. That way, if anything does spill, it won't leak off the back on the stand. If I ever want to resale the stand, at least it will have that added value. I'm also going to chalk in and woodfill the gaps where the legs areand sand it all down, so there will be absolutely no gaps in the bottom of the stand. Which, I got to thinkin' if you really wanted a custom sump, you could probably build it directly into the bottom of the stand, and epoxy it all in, eh? lol
I got pics tonight of the progress!!!!

This is the second coat. The gaps in the bottom of the stand have been filled with woodfiller. I'm going to chalk the seams everywhere else and add a 2x2 board in the back, primed and painted in.
Here's what I'm aiming to do soon:
1. Finish the cabinet doors and trim them. Prime them in and paint them, 3 coats to match the stand.
2. Chalk the inside of the stand and add that 2x2 to the back, prime it in and paint everything inside the stand an "off white." Scratch that, I'm going to decide what color the inside is, since my wife can't decide.
3. lightly hand sand the 3rd coat of black to get rid of the brush strokes, then use an air compressor to blow off the paint dust.
4. Use a polyurithane (sp?) clear coat to finish the stand.
So, do ya'll think that a high gloss or a satin polyurithane finish would look better?

You went with a gloss paint you might as well go with a gloss finish. Satin finish might look kind of goofy over a gloss paint. The small cans of finish are pretty cheap, you could always try some samples.

If I had bought the more expensive plywood to begin with I would have stained the whole thing. I know how to do a pretty dang good job staining wood - I do it every week at my workplace.
My wife just informed me that I am going to build Emma a dresser drawers set. lol! I guess Heather likes my wood working skillz. lol

Yeah, I was thinking of doing the gloss finish, since I went with the gloss paint. Just wanted another opinion. A can of minwax polyurethane costs about $8. That should be enough for two coats at least. Any tips on how to prepare for the poly to go on? or how to spread it out to keep it from having brush strokes??

Woah, I have no idea why it just posted that over and over again. If a mod is reading, could you edit that, please??

didn't realize that you were doing a gloss paint. I somehow missed that... well, then it's a gloss finish.
lol, ok boss. :D
So, I'm thinking of getting my 20g long sump over to my workshop so that I can fit it under the stand. Then I want to buy a 10g tank so that I can build a platform for it to fit just above the 20glong. The 10g is going to hold the algae scrubber. I really wanted an ATO on this tank. :(
Maybe I can still fit it in the cabinet to the side of the aquarium. I'm thinking of something simple, like a 3g plastic bettafish tank or better yet, just a small rubbermaid/plastic tote. LOL I'm cheap.

LOL... nothing wrong with a bucket to hold an ALGAE SCRUBBER. It's not gonna go on display....
And thank you for calling me boss :)
