New skimmer help

my older brother just gave me his protein skimmer. I just took it off his tank and im not sure how to go about cleaning this. (it still has water in it and still the colloection cup has stuff in it. I dont want to break anything and i need to know how to clean this and how to maitane one of these (not sure what kind it is... ill have to ask my brother.)

Im pretty sure its a CPR Bak-Pak 2 Protein Skimmer. Do i have to buy all that blue junk that goes in it, or do i just wash it off and put it back, or not touch it at all?

I tossed the blue stuff in the trash......when I clean the whole unit....I just run hot water thru it....it is not made for a normal person to get their hands down into

Then just hang it on, turn it on...adjust the air tube....and teh cup also....see the band around it? I keep teh very bottom right at the water level in the skimmer

If it is that bad, you can soak it in a white vinegar and water solution too (soak it overnight).....then try to use an aquarium brush...best you can
they are really easy to work though

The airline comes off the pump....it's just not in the picture that's all
and as you can see (Burrito)....the ELBOW.....is what needs to be turned so that the outflow of water is at water level....that will help break your bubble issue

Its not that bad, i was reffering to the "gunk" in it. The worst part was taterewas some algea blocking an intake, and the impeller from spinning. it should be fixed now though.

Thats not a picture of my actual skimmer, just the same kind of it. It does look like its missing the airline though. Which brings me to my next question, the airline is supposed to be out of the water right? And how often should i clen the skimmer/ empty out the collection cup thing?
EDIT: and the blue stiff is for extra filtration right?

OK GUYS....Look at this
the airline coming from the pump...BURRITO.....you an also see how I have the elbow positioned

The airline coming from tank...see it has a litle holder...YES BURRITO...you do need the airline

IMO Pictures say a thousand words....LOL
ALSO HUNT...I empty my cup about 2x a week....see it in the pic....I will empty it tonight
the blue stuff collects garbage IMO

mine scam me >.< mine didnt come with the blue stuff lol and that alot of junk in the collection cup o.o and ya meowzer and some one on the other thread told me to pull that out and i was like WTF?!?!?

uuhhh, i hate problems...i plugged it nn and put it in a bucket and it seems abnormally loud, (not that i really know what normally is) how loud should it be? And how big should the bubbles be comming out of the intake tube? they seemed kind of big.

Mine makes no noise......I did have a bubble issue...from the outflow.....that is why in my pictures you see the elbow turned up
are you running it in SW? It may have to break in some in your tank.....

Its not in my tank yet, i only tested it in a bucket with freshwater. I guess ill see how it works when its my tank.
