i would have loved to have a 75 as my first tank and i think you would have been fine having a 75...but a 38 is still good. it really limits fish cause you cant get eels or tangs, etc in a 38. but regardless of that, that store should have known better to sell you some of those fish. also...make sure you do research of your own as well

Well the 38g is a very nice tank.....The only bad thing is the list you have will not work with it. There is still quite a bit you can do though.....just do some research...re-set it up, and go from there

You can get some great fish in that size tank!
Firefish, wrasses, clowns, gobies, hawkfish (tempermental but cute :) ) those are all personable, fun, pretty fish to have. Just do some reading, ask here (we love to help!) research what you want with what you have and that tank will be great

OK....where to begin....
1st of all ..is that gravel????
2. You really need more rock....you say you have 15-20lbs...I think you need to at least double that.
3, take off the Freshwater background and get a solid one...black or blue
4..I see no powerheads...look up Koralia powerheads...you need a couple of them to circulate water
Don't want to overwhelm you
gravel? its the sand he sold me at the store. live sand

I'd grab two koralia #2's myself one on each end of the tank

You have no oxygen flow going thru your tank which could be contributing to your fish deaths

Lol, me either thats why I went with one question. But you need alot more rock, some kind of powerhead AND um..no gravel if thats what that is.
Personally if I were you, I'd start over. Take the eel back hes going to outgrow that tank fast anyway. Then get the gravel out, put in some live sand, 30+ lbs of rock and some powerheads. Like a couple of Koralia 2's would probably be enough.
Do you have a skimmer?
no skimmer. again he said i didnt need one

You don't have to have a skimmer no but with the amount of live rock you have and no sump the skimmer would probably be a big help. I hope we're not overwhelming you here

You have a very very nice tank....we can get it right for you...just needs some work...

ok, so lets say i dont have the option to take the eel back.
you guys say to empty the tank completely, and throw out the "gravel" thats in there now? and start completely over with sand?
what can i do with the eel for now?

OK....You do not have to empty the tank....you can siphon the gravel out.....Are you sure your LFS will not take the eel back???

Hows it going everyone? i am new to this hobby. I LOVE IT! Except i had a little problem.
i spent alot of time in my lfs and talking to the owner. i ended up buying a
38g tank. have some live rock in it. probably like 15-20lbs. bought some fish.
had a porky puffer, regal angel, powder brown. well they all died. tank is a month and a week old.
after talking to the guy at the store we found out what happened. when i bought the tank he gave me a little bottle to de-chlorinate the water.
i had done water changes and didnt know that i had to keep putting more in. well since all the fish died i did a 30% water change a week ago and put in a bunch of the de-chlorinator in. and then 2 days ago i did a 5g water change again.
today i put a snowflake eel in and he is twitching. i didnt notice him twitch in the store. i just wanna make sure before i go out and buy anymore fish that i am ok.
any input on what i should do?
thanks for all the help in advance!
Every fish you put in the tank are way to big, which is why they probably got stressed and died. You didn't do a cycle? IMO, you should bring the Eel back and maybe start with a few Clownfish. I'm just trying to encourage you & help you, not yell at you.
How big is the Eel?

Maybe try to bring it to a different store?
Put him in a bucket, with some water from your tank, a heater, and a working filter...

I was just shown this thread and thought I would add my .02.
the first thing would be, whatever this LFS has told you is crap. the substrate that is in there is gravel or maybe crushed coral not live sand. eels are hardy but if the tank is not cycled like it sounds then even he is in for some trouble. one thing that you didnt list is salinity. do you have any way of measuring this?
sorry dont mean to sound like a prick
