Sip, one day I'm going to have to come down and meet your friends. I've met Julian before (great guy!) but I haven't met Rod or the others.

Nova - Check out my recovery thread and see what I got and if you want, I will go with you and introduce you guys. He's very selective on who comes and goes in his house.

No doubt - I'm sure most of us are the same way, LOL. I have to know a person pretty well before I invite them over.
Tank update. I ordered the magnets for the access panel today. Bottom of the panel is going to be held in position with a simple wood support, and the top is secured with a couple strips of flat steel banding that are epoxied against the panel and two neodymium magnets that will be glued behind the stand skin. I've already tested this with a spare neodymium magnet I have and a small baseboard-puller. Pull force is still very strong through the wood. I'll order my seahorse handles with my next "allowance," maybe. They're cool, but not high on the list of priorities.
Apparently the Mystery Wrasse has become VERY high on our list of priorities. lol

I'm glad I got started on the stand today. I just got word that my new porch furniture will be here tomorrow, which means the porch swing has to be disassembled tomorrow night and the new stuff unpacked and moved in. Will probably take up my Tuesday and Wednesday nights. On the other hand - glad to get rid of the swing! It's just too big for our little porch.
Hey Sip, ya want it? I have to have it gone by Wednesday night, but if you're interested, it's a full size porch swing that lays flat. Dark brown powdercoat on the frame, and green cushions. The spare cat hair is totally free of course.

I hear ya. It's the main reason why we're getting rid of it. The porch is not very large, and the swing just takes up too much room. Once it's gone and the new stuff comes in, I'll start planning my plant stands and container garden.
Yes. I'm a "nester." What can I say.

Second coat of stain got applied as planned. And for Seth (who gets grumpy when I talk too much without photographic backup), I have a pic for you:

Here's the main unit after stain coat #1. That's a 29g sump tank in there. I trimmed a little more off the top of the access hole, now I can get my arm in there fairly easily. It's still a stretch (literally) but I can service the whole sump if I need to. It'll do until I can afford to have a custom sump/fuge built...which is what I'd like to do in a year or so.

Wow. Yeah, i was just looking at the clearance and scratching my head.
The question is,... Can you get your skimmer in and out of there easily and service it? Cup clearance???

Yes and no. I can get it in and out with difficulty, but I'll only be removing the entire skimmer a few times a year. The cup, on the other hand, isn't too hard to remove daily if need be. I may also drainline mod it.

Lol. I guess I'm weird. I take my skimmer to the sink once a month or so.
Have you talked about any other filtration?
It's basically going to be the same as last time. Standard 3 chamber sump. First chamber is subdivided so the DT drains into a mini chamber filled with layers of filter floss, activated carbon and/or Purigen, and a chamber for glass rings. Second part of the first chamber houses the protein skimmer. Middle chamber is a 'fuge area for rubble and chaeto (I was toying with a mud bed as well, but not sure), and of course the final chamber is the return pump. ATO unit will be hooked up through the stand wall into the side cabinet where my top off water reservoir is located. There's room next to the skimmer and on the side of the tank for a GFO reactor and a TLF biopellet reactor if I choose to experiment with that.

Sonofagun. I discovered that I *JUST* missed *****'s $1 per gallon sale. Would have been a perfect time for a 30g. Crap. Oh well....sticking with the original plan for the sumpgrade.

I think the $1/g sale only pertains to 10g tanks, 20g longs, and 40g breeder tanks.
Filtration plan sounds good. :)
So lets talk more about lighting. I know you said at some point you are going to buy leds. Have you looked any further into it?

LEDs. I'm not getting them from the bay, but these are pretty close to the item I'm looking at:

55 3-watt LEDs, one two dimmable circuits. I'll be getting two of these for the tank. Might get one to test on the horse tank first. These will be purchased in about a month.....I won't be doing corals immediately, and I need a month to cycle up anyway.

I hope they work out for you man. Just seems too good to be true. I've never heard of the brand of bulbs that they are using. Just don't know.

It might be worth the risk. On the other hand, if I'm not happy with them I can just resell them on the bay. But we'll see.....it will certainly save some $$ in terms of cooling costs.
I was a busy bee tonight. Got the old couch swing taken apart and down to the trash, the new furniture moved up and unpacked...and a first coat of polyurethane on the stand center. Second coat tomorrow, along with painting the plywood baseplate. Workworkwork.....

Amazing. Rugburn is still alive after a full 3 weeks in QT. And eating like a little pig, I might add. Might this be the RG that I actually get to keep?? Stay tuned for our next episode of "100 ways to kill your RG" and find out!
I'm glad his QT is coming to an end, though. He's clearly in good shape, and the scratch on his eye has healed perfectly (I think he got it in transit). But the main reason I'm glad about his QT is......I should be ready to order my first batch of fish soon!!
I think this deserves a
or two.
Seriously. I'm going to be adding water the weekend of August 4th, so I think I'll put in my order for the first batch of QT fish that weekend as well. Either the Chromis or the Anthias....and I STILL haven't decided how many of each to do. My initial plan was to have 3 blue reef chromis and three Evansi or Bartlett's anthias. Probably too many. I wonder if I'll have pecking order issues if I cut that down to two and two. I know someone mentioned the possibility of aggression on the part of the BR Chromis, but honestly I haven't found any evidence of that online, so I'm not sure. Here's the updated stock list, and the likely order of appearance:
2 BR Chromis
2 Evansi Anthias
1 Green Banded Sleeper Goby
1 Mystery Wrasse
1 Bicolor Blenny
2 Green Mandarins
1 Flame Angel
1 PB Tang
I'm also toying with the idea of adding a copperband. Risky in a reef tank. Anyone have any experiences?

some say that it worked for them but in my personal experience not really. Not only they are extremely finicky, it bothered all of my softies and when I gave it away to a friend who only had sps, it pecked on acros like crazy.

Yeah, you know I'm not even all that crazy about them....wife has wanted a butterfly "forever." Better off just leaving it out of the list....she's getting her PBT and Mystery Wrasse, after all.
With all the non-reef-safe fish Michelle loves, maybe I can convince her to set up another FO tank in the future. LOL.....I may have to give up on my pipefish tank if I do that, but I could possibly keep a couple DF pipes in the reef tank when it's established anyway.
