Hey guys, just wanted to check up on these lights. Are they still doing great, bad, ok? I am building a stand and canopy for a 55 i just bought. I haven't purchased lights yet, and I was told that the 260w PC's would be fine for a reef setup. I have been interested in this setup for a while, but I just wanna make sure Im not going to get skeerewd. Since this will be my only set of lights, Id hate to have to run out and dump a few more hundred in something else if these were to fail. Thanks.

I have the smaller version with a 175 watt mh and 2 small pc actinics. The pc lighting is no problem, but the mh only worked sporadically. It blows fuses continuously. I even sent it all the way back to Cali (I live in NJ) and the seller from ---- sent me back another broken fixture. Now I can't get it to work at all. If I try the black ballast box gets VERY hot, but the light does not turn on. I am thinking of having an electrician look at it. Maybe I can replace the ballast and the horribly hard to find DE 175 watt bulb (possibly a modification so I can use a single ended bulb). I am so frustrated at this point. I had to put my back-up light on the tank (a 30 gallon cube) and it is only 72 watts of 50/50. :-( Maybe I should just chalk it up to a lesson learned and buy a whole new fixture.

A picture from when the light was working:

Are you blowing the house fuse? Maybe you're running too many amps. Add 'em up if you can find the amps on each electrical device on that circuit.

I don't own this fixture, but I was curious to see if that source had them, as you said..and they don't even have them! FYI, you're not supposed to use reference to other fish sites.

Did you find a site other than the site you bought those lights from that carry them??

I would like to clear something up. There is no such thing as a double ended 175 watt MH bulb. Odyssea is misrepresenting their product. If you go to the aquatraders website and look at the picture of the replacement bulb you can see the words 150 watt printed on the box. However, they label it for sale as 175. Any 150 watt bulb should work with this fixture. Personally, I would recommend not purchasing another odyssea bulb when it is time to replace. Try something like a 150 phoenix 14000k or a 150 XM DE

I had an odyssea 24 inch unit that lasted me 3 months. It somehow overheated and the ballast had some sort of clay like squirting out the vents. Im guessing thats what it does when it overheats I have no clue but I havent used it since.

I am absolutely positive. Anything being sold as 175 watt double ended is mislabeled. That would be the reason why they are nearly impossible to find, most vendors are labeling their bulbs correctly. Check the pic on aquatraders in the replacement bulb section. The caption says 175 but the box says 150.

WOW!! Good observation! I had to check this myself, and you're absolutely right!

Glad to help. Like I said before, there are some really nice bulbs out there so when its time to replace go with something not odyssea.

Not that I know of except they are straight pins which makes finding replacement bulbs a little more challenging, but not impossible. (Most pc bulbs are square pins)
