However, there were hundreds of other's in this country who have made similar contributions that have affected how we look at one another as individuals. Advancements in medicine, women's rights, minority rights, technological advancements -- these are just as important to the way of American life as what MLK tried to accomplish. However, we don't give them National holidays, do annual marches in thier honor, or continue to reference them as if they were the next Messiah. MLK was a significant individual in American history. I know that. But I don't need that shoved down my throat every year, and used as a way to create a guilt factor because you think their are still major racial inequities in this country.
Your comment exactly - "You can't be serious... why are there hardly any blacks playing in the NHL...must be racists" (insert foot into mouth here). My "white men can't jump" line was intended as sacasm to this remark. Don't take everything you read here literally.
If you feel guilty that is your own fault....
As far as sports go... the reason why there are less blacks in NHL is because first it is expensive in comparison to basketball and football. Baseball is also expensive for youths now with the traveling leagues. 2nd, hockey is played most often in areas where there is smaller black populations. 3rd, the schools that offer hockey in high school are private (rich) schools where there is probably little to no minority students.
Ask yourself this... why are there hardly any asians americans in American sports today or american hispanics? They are all usually from other countries and come here to play...
