So, observing the tank this evening i noticed some coralline algae growing on the return pipe and parts of the overflow. Im going to try to keep the glass as clean as possible.
So far there is no use for a fuge. I had a little hair algae on the return pipe but i manually removed it. None so far and it has been a week. I assume that my new tang will take care of whatever grows.
Speaking of the YT, i fed more flake this evening and (she) ate it without problems. I also put some nori in the tank for (her). She hasnt paid it much attention just yet but i am sure she will.
I cant wait to get my canopy built. I hate to rush through a project but jeez, i just want to get it done so that i can have some real lights over the tank.
The side cabinet needs to be built soon as well. I priced some solid red oak at 2.99$ per square foot of 1x. Thats a steal considering that lowes and home depot have it for $6.99 for the same thing. Heh.
Oh, and the monti frag i have has great PE.

I just removed about 1/3 of the sandbed this evening. The tank isnt that upset. There arent many particles because i siphoned it out instead of scooping it. I had forgot just how much sand i had put in the tank until i startedtrying to get it out. Lol.
The yellow tang is eating the nori quite nicely. I dont think she will give me any problems.
Watching valhalla rising right now. Kicking back before another grueling week.

Sounds good.....My PB still won't take nori from the clip.....The clip still freaks him out....now if I stand there and hold the dang stuff in the tank he'll eat it, but holy christmas I'd stand there all day.....Maybe a job for the granddaughter!!!!!!

Yeah, Well, I have mine clipped to the side of the tank by the magnetic scraper (magfloat) and that method has proven positive for me time and time again.
I'll do maybe a 5g water change tomorrow and get more sand out. Hopefully I will be sand free by the end of the week at this rate.
I'm planning on getting an old pillow case and putting the new course sand in it and running a water hose into the bag and letting it rinse out all of the fine particles. That way there won't be such a cloud in the tank when I put the new sand in. I'm going to test the new sand in a high flow area to see if it blows around much. If it does, I will go even more course.
I finally have a little money to work on my tank. It feels great!

What size sand are you getting exactly? I'm going to remove mine again through water changes overtime. I'm fed up with it

I already got it. Look at the picture I posted. It says "seaflor special grade reef sand." Not sure if it is #1 or #5.
I mixed up 3g of water last night. It's clear and tests well this morning so I am going to go ahead and do a water change and get more sand out of the system this morning before work.

I'm setting up an bio cube for my dad right now and im going to go bare bottom. Im going to let zoas and 4 different types of gsp on the floor like a carpet.

snake, I do the same thing with algae. My mag-float serves two functions:
1) moveable algae clip
2) algae scrubber
I have had great success using this method.

So, I did another 3g water change this evening and got more sand out of the tank. This is taking more water changes than I originally imagined. :( I'm up to 9g of water and not really anywhere closer to getting all of the sand out of the tank.
I have another 3g of water mixing as we speak. I will probably do another 3g water change in the morning and mix another 3 gallons up tomorrow evening. I figure at about 25 to 30g of water I will have removed most, if not all of the sandbed.
My computer won't recognize my iPhone at the moment and I will probably have to re-boot my computer before I can upload more photos of what I have actually done.
The yellow tang is eating really well! Practically munching on everything that I have put in the tank. I'm happy with the way he is progressing in my system. Lets hope that he will remain active and eating well.
I'm considering getting a flame hawk or a long nose hawk next. Then maybe a pair of neon gobies. A couple of cleaner shrimp would also be fun to watch.
The monti that I have in the tank is doing really well. It's polyps are still open and doing well. No growth, obviously. lol. I still have to glue it to a rock when I finally decide it's permanent location.

BB don't have more detritus than sand bed covered tanks.....It's just with the BB it's more noticeable......

I agree! That's why I am a big advocate of cleaning the sandbed or having some critters clean it for yah. But over time it needs to be maintained...

In 6 months, it will be filled with zoas and gsp. It will also have about 5 hermits and 10 snails so I think it will be ok.

I did another 3g water change this morning and i am making only 2g up for this evenings sand siphoning. I feel like three or four more times and i will have a lot of it taken care of. This definitely wasnt something that i was looking forward to doing but it needed to be done. I think i may position my powerheads so that the majority of the sand is blown to one side of the tank so that i can dona few "mass" collections. Shouldnt take that much more work if it works out like i want it to.
I want to make a temporary canopy out of wood that i have already to hang my lights for the time being while i construct the real canopy out of solid red oak. The temporary canopy will be simple leftover plywood and painted black on the outside and white on the inside.
I might make a temporary side cabinet as well. Just makes sense for the time being.
Just have to rustle up a used pillow case now. :)

Changing out sand is a PITA, but you gotta do what you gotta do. I am in the process of doing the same thing. I have done about 5-6, 12gal water changes and I would say I have at least 4-5 more to do. But I don't mind having it take a while. I figure that the bio filter is taking a bit of a hit each time I remove sand, so letting it build back up can't hurt.
I hope you can get the temp canopy up so you can get the lights going. I know you have waited a while. Good luck Snake!!
