I am concerned about any new fish i add to my tanks. Especially ones that cost more than $45. Lol.
Sounds good. Ill have to look into those jigs. I was considering buying a dovetail jig for the drawers but i know there are other options.
I used a small powerhead to push the sand to one end of the tank. Ill have to make up another 3g this evenin and do another siphoning in the morning. Almost there!

The cost of a good dovetail jig is kind of questionable unless your going to do a lot of drawer making and other odds and ends.....Have you noticed any changes in your parameters removing the sand.....Probably not, because your following up with water changes as you do the removal......

Sounds like you have a full day today Seth.
Awesome for being able to build something for you and for your family Seth, I wish I had your skills.
I work retail so it's hell for me. I go to work around 8:30 and get back around 11:30pm.
I won't be able to monitor my tank until xmas afternoon.
I will go home and test the alkalinity again tonight though to see if things didn't go whack again... crap who knew that acros will suck up that much alk and calcium??? Jeez.
So you are going bare bottom now Seth?

Yeah, busy busy. But, I have gotten a lot done to that stand today. I got the rest of the trim on and it's all primed in except for one end. I'll be happy when that project is over with. Though, I did have inspiration on how to do the doors while I was at the pizza place for dinner. Maybe I'll have some time on Monday afternoon to work on it some and possibly get the doors done.
I really enjoy building things. I haven't come across something that I am not good at - as long as it requires intelligence. Although, I suck at sports - I just don't have the natural athletic ability. But, when it comes to pretty much anything else, ... I can do whatever I want. lol. I thought about med school at one point, but I just don't want to be in school that long. :(. I love to use my hands and my mind - and carpentry - especially building furniture is one of those "creative" things that allows me to do both. Plus, I absolutely love tools and equipment. I guess that is one of the reasons why I like the equipment side of saltwater aquariums so much. lol.
That sucks that you are so busy! But, I bet your getting paid pretty well for all of the hours that you are putting in. At least I hope so. Yeah, SPS corals in general suck up a lot of calcium and alkalinity - especially when they have adequate light and nutrients to grow!
No, I'm not going barebottom at this point. I think I am going to do a 1" to 1 1/2" sandbed at this point. I like barebottom tanks - but I think I am going to add the sand that I just bought to the tank and see how it does over time. If my corals don't seem to be doing well, I'll just remove it, rinse and start over. lol.
Tomorrow, I have my sights set on buying a pillow case at Wal-mart so that I can rinse my sand and add it to the tank tomorrow afternoon or even evening. We will just have to see how that pans out.
The good news is that I have another 4g of water mixing overnight - so that will give me some water to pull the last remaining sand out of the tank. The powerheads were repositioned early this morning so that they would blow the sand over to one side of the tank and pile it up. So, I'll go ahead and get as much as I can out tomorrow morning and see if there is too much left or not and decide if I need to do one more siphoning or not. We will just have to see...
I have wood for a temporary canopy - but I have money to buy a full calcium reactor setup at this time. I don't know what I want to do. I probably should go ahead and purchase the HQI metal halide bulbs that I need, and probably the reactor only and wait for the CO2 system as money comes in - and save some money back to buy some actual solid red oak for a decent canopy build. I may end up just buying a sheet of red oak ply and getting it over with - since the stand that I have is built out of ply anyways - it will all match. I dunno. lol.
Before I go and start putting SPS in my tank here and there, I need to finally come up with a decision for how I am going to dip all of my new incoming frags. I have been doing some research on the big forums about dipping with Bayer Advanced Insect killer from Walmart or Home Depot. I have seen many, many people do this method and have said that their corals look really good and were not affected by the dip. In the world of SPS corals - it's either that you dip NOW or you will dip LATER. I would rather dip now instead of later, personally. So, I think I may try this insect killer and see what all the hype is.
I can't wait to start adding some decent corals to the tank again! There are quite a few SPS coral frags at my LFS that come in on a regular basis - I'm itching to start adding some of these frags to my tank. The problem though is that freakin' canopy. lol. Oh well, it will all happen sooner or later. I'm making progress as quick as I can. Especially after all of the work and stress and projects that I have to do and get done this time of year.

By the way, is anyone else looking forward to the "After Christmas Newbie Rush" on the forums? "I got a tank for Christmas and I bought a buncha damsels. Now what do I do?" Tis the season!

I'm hoping for anything to help make this forum more active.
Same here. Sure, there are going to be a lot of new members asking newbie questions, but that's what forums are all about, right? Maybe a few of them will stick around all year, who knows. I like it because then there is a potential for new friends. :D

IMO you should concentrate on the lighting at this point.....Truly no need for a Ca reactor at this stage of the game....More a luxury; whereas the lighting is more important, dosing can be done manual for the time being if needed.....
I had been following the thread over on RC awhile ago about the Bayer, and it has had good success, but don't be totally content on relying solely on just a dip and into your DT.....It has been proven that NO dip is 100% successful, and you might be giving yourself false security.....Your best route option is dip and QT......

Ha same here. Im looking forward to alot of traffic... this forum is dead and its sad to see it in this state..
Momey? Not really also I spent all of my soon to be bonus money on toys for local orphanage and foster homes for babies, toddlers and little children. So in the end, im broke as a joke... T.T
I need to keep an eyes on the sps and the alk and calcium.. sigh.... that makes alot of sense because I just upgraded my lights and I have so much nutrients in my system due to so many fish in there.

Yeah, that's what I am thinking. I will probably go ahead and order the rest of my lights.
Yeah, I'd rather do some preventative measures though, than just stick them in the display tank when they arrive. Maybe one day I will have the room for a quarantine system, but for now I am at max capacity. QT done right is awesome for pest and disease control, but only for those who have the extra money and time to do it... I don't. lol Maybe one day.

Yeah, the extra traffic after Christmas is one of the things that I look forward to. That's awesome that you do so much for your community. I know that you are a God-send to someone out there.

I siphoned out most of the remaining oolitic sand this evening and washed the new course grain sand in a pillow case for at least 20 minutes until the water ran clear. I probably should have rinsed it longer to be sure, but I don't have patience for that kinda thing. It was "clear enough."
So, I went ahead and added about five full cups of new sand to my tank this evening. The water cleared up surprisingly fast. I'll change out the filter floss in the morning so I am not disturbing the system too much at a time.
All the inhabitants are doing well. The yellow tang literally ATTACKED the nori that I put in the tank this evening - even with the tank being so cloudy. lol. Good sign.
I'm anxious to get started working on my canopy for my tank so that I can install the lighting system that I bought the rest of the parts and pieces for over my tank. Although, I really do have to start painting that stand tomorrow afternoon. Maybe I can do a coat of paint and work on my canopy some while it's drying. BAH! I have to start working on the doors. UGH! No time for my own personal projects! :(

So, I was observing my tank today and I noticed that I am starting to have some coralline algae starting to grow on the overflow, the return plumbing and even some on the glass - only where the little T5 unit I have is shining. It lets me know that the tank is doing well - that the PO4 is where it needs to be and the chemical balance and everything is starting to all balance out nicely. There isn't any sign of hair algae in the tank or in the sump. The skimmer is doing it's job pretty well.
I CAN'T WAIT to build a nice canopy. I have plenty of money to do it now. Just have to find the time now..... :X That stand project is almost done. It has to be delivered this weekend - so I am getting it done tomorrow. All of the hardware has to be installed tomorrow. Ugh,... now I go about talking about someone elses tank in my own personal thread again. LOL. I'll post in the other thread about that update.
So, I was thinking of putting in an online order for some more fish and inverts soon. But, I really wanted some help putting together the rest of my fish list.
The inverts that I would really like to get...
2 skunk cleaner shrimp
2 peppermint shrimp
1 cucumber (later on)
assorted feather dusters
assorted mythrax crabs
Fish that I am looking at...
longnose hawkfish - or the red one. I would really like a red fish in my tank
flame angel?
canary blenny
carpenters or a McCoskers Fairy wrasse?
Suggestions? Comments?

By the way, the T5 standoffs that I had purchased for my Christmas present are the ones for the waterproof end caps... not the cheapo shunted sockets. So, to remedy this situation, I am purchasing clips ... spring kind of thing... that you simply screw into the canopy and the bulb snaps into it. I'm tired of waiting.
I've also decided that in the real canopy that I build, the metal halides will be positioned higher than the T5's and the T5's will be positioned lower so that I can get better PAR values. Yes, it's a little more work, but I think it will be worth it.

I have both carpenter and mccoskers and they are awesome. Be sure to get males as they look the best. If in groups be sure to get 2 or 3 females as 1 would not be able to withstand the needs of a horny male and die.
I agree on the hawk fish. Its one or the other.
Flame angel is a good red fish but be sure to keep an eye on that sucker.
