Naa, no luck required with phyto. Keep it all clean, keep the rotifers separate. I think it will be worth it for the health of the tank. PLUS, my LFS said if I can give some to him that he would give me some credit. :D
Maybe I can grow some rotifers and also enrich some brine shrimp. I know it's a good practice for when I start breeding clownfish again. :D

Following too, can't wait to see what you do with this tank in the end.
Oh, and your daughter is a cutie!

Ok, lets say I have $1000 to spend. What do you all think it should go to next? Pick a combination of the following:
Apex Controller $500
Calcium reactor $500
Livestock $250
Canopy and side cabinet: $250
Nikon D80 SLR camera $400
Decent halide bulbs ~$100
Salt: $70
Odds and ends ~$150
Keep in mind, this is pretty much the only time I will have enough money to buy the expensive stuff right off hand. And maybe the last time I will be able to buy expensive stuff until I graduate.

Nice,
I like posts like this.

I would spend the $1000.00 on:
Canopy and side cabinet: $250.00
Bulbs: $100-$125.00
Apex: $500.00
Livestock & odds and ends: $150.00
You could maybe save a few bucks and just build the side cabinet to keep the little one out of all the wires. The canopy is maybe an extra expense that is not needed. It would look very nice but you can use the temp/basic one you already built (and spent $$ on). The bulbs are a good purchase, you will need them. I have tried the Odyssea bulbs and they are okay but not that good. I found that they got used up very quick. The T5's after 8 months or so started to give me algae issues. The Apex controller is the whoop, this is a good purchase!! The rest you can use for stocking and little expenses.
The calc reactor is an expense you can wait on. You can always manually dose on the cheap for a while until you can afford one of these. The SLR camera is very nice, but it won't make the tank look or run any better (with the little one a SLR camera a great purchase but maybe down the line a bit, its always a good group Xmas or Bday present to ask for).
What are you leaning towards? Its your $$ and your tank.

My choices would be.....
1. Metal halide bulbs..... You have livestock so give them good lighting...
2. Canopy and side cabinet.... These are always little details that plague me and stuff that always gets put off..... Finished product Seth would be another good example for your business.
3. Camera.... 2 fold answer.... A good camera is a good investment for your business, and you have a growing daughter, lots of pics.... Somehow I always get conned into taking pics at the sporting events for the athletic association and my wife's friends kids events...plus some cool macro pics of your livestock.
4. Salt and other odds and ends.... Still could have a little cash leftover.....
Being your on a budget the Apex is more a luxury item as well as the Ca reactor.... Keep in mind you'd have the added expense of CO 2 refills. Those 2 I deem dream items, because your system running isn't dependent at all on those 2 items.

A nice canopy is in order doe to the lightning setup being used and why have all the light spillage and MH housings out in the open?? Curb appeal to keep the wife happy as well

Curb appeal, the main reason I spent 600 + on Ecoexotic Panorama Marines, the old Hamilton VHO hood was not passing with the wife, it didn't help the guy I bought it from had some mismatched wood attached to hang it from. I must say though the New LEDs give a good look and I'm testing one SPS acro piece under them and its polyps have been coming out.

Don't worry too much about pe. Even without it, it will live and encrust. Not at a fast pace at all but it will grow. I know it's bad but I have very little PE yet, they are growing.

I would build the cabinet myself, lol. That's what I enjoy doing - woodwork.
I know that I should probably do the practical things first. I think I may buy a camera and not include it as part of the tank fund. So, taking out the camera - I'm still undecided.

I don't think I am going to include the camera in part of the tank fund. I think I'll use different money for that. So, the camera is a must buy, but no longer part of the $1000 to spend. I think the camera is going to be a great investment - one for the family and my hobby. CO2 refills in my area are about $12 for 10lbs... and that would last me roughly six months. Not too much maintenance expense there.
I REALLY want a calcium reactor though. I guess more just to have it than anything else. lol. I may end up going with a Ca Reactor, 250 for the canopy and side cabinet and 250 for livestock. Eh, we will see how it works out.

Eh, my wife hasn't said a word about it. In fact, she said "It looks good" when I brought it home. lol.

Ok, I'll try not to worry about it too much. It hasn't been STN'ing or RTN'ing so it should be fine for a while. It might need more light then what I am giving it now. Just not sure yet. Both my montiporas are doing alright though.
Honestly, I'm not sure if I am going to buy my livestock and corals online or just at my LFS... I think I should personally buy them from my LFS and support a local business.
THIS WEDNESDAY... my LFS is getting in a livestock shipment and he usually gets at least two powder brown tangs with every shipment. I may get lucky and end up buying one Wednesday. Wish me luck!

Got my halide bulbs in. I bought 15k bulbs and they look really white. I dunno.
Since there is a lot more light in the tank now, i noticed a few things.
First, there is more algae on the glass than i thought. Lol.
Second, i noticed that now the purple monti"s polyps arent coming out.
Its not a chemical issue. Its not a nutrient issue. Im kinda at a loss here. New tank syndrome?

My iPhone camera won't take good pics of these corals under my current lighting conditions. I'm saving up for a D80 Nikon camera right now, so maybe in a few weeks I'll be able to get it.
I don't know if it is acclimating to the new light or what... It just seems like I can't catch a break recently. :(

Very cool. I have been on the look out for a powder brown for a while now. My LFS has had some white cheek tangs but no powder browns. Good luck, it is a beautiful fish!!
