Sounds easy enough to use from what I read and understand....Is it true that you need 2......Would suck up valuable outlet space in the fish room possibly......

I am frustrated beyond belief with my tank.
Im turning it into a mixed reef. Upgrading the lights to leds, adding macroalgae to the sump and a few cosmetic touches but other the. That im gonna let it sit and mature for a while.
I put in my old sc65 skimmer in the sump and its just akimming away. My diablo skimmer is not doing anything at all. Im fixing to pull it and put it in storage after a good cleaning. Macro will be good enough for now.

sorry to read about the frustrations Seth. I totally understand your deli-ma and that's why I have gone with the saying K.I.S.S. Lol.....
I would love to have all those things you were planning on but my space is very limited under the tank. So...... keepn it real and so far all is doing very well and I am content.
when you have more time to play with, like spring break, I'm sure you'll jump right back into it and be victorious!

Seth,I might add if you do go LED without a canopy, one cool thing is you get a cool shimmer effect,or at least I do when I pull my canopy to clean, I would keep it off but my jawfish and yasha gobys like to jump, as I've pulled them out of the overflow a few times already.I am also doing a mixed reef with some SPS and LPS,I hope you get you cyano battle victory,it seems I'm also battling that a lot

That's some pretty good advice, Kiefers. Thanks for the words of encouragement.
I am getting a list together of a few things that I want to get for my system...
Macroalgae / various
Copepods/amphipods pack
Macroalgae light
Some assorted snails
a couple of cleaner shrimp
Reefbreeders photon 32 LED light
PM1 module for the pH probe on my Apex
soft corals
LPS corals
SPS frag pack from Harry's.
I also want a clam or two or three in the tank. I'll be feeding plenty of phyto to try to get the filter feeding inverts happy.
I think for the most part that this shouldn't cost a whole lot of money - not like buying all the rest of my equipment that I have already purchased. (Apex Jr., Calcium reactor, etc. etc.)
I am going to pull my Reef Octopus Diablo XS160 protein skimmer from the sump. I'm not going to waste electricity on it if it doesn't work properly. I'll keep my little SC65 going full speed and possibly invest in a different cheap skimmer in the future, but for now, macroalgae, a small skimmer, water changes and plenty of filter feeding inverts is going to do the work for me.
This Summer I was thinking about building a custom acrylic sump to get a feel for building acrylic tanks. It's a fun project that I can do and gain some more experience in the hobby...
This Summer I also want to build my phytoplankton culture station so that I can have some fresh live phyto for my tank.... I'll have plenty of funds to do everything I want for my tank this Summer... and the time to do it.

I have a skimmer that is on the cheaper side that I use in the sump,it came with the tank,a Coralife 120 and it seems to pull out quite a bit of waste,I do have to adjust it a little here and there but I am happy with its performance

That sounds like a plan! Looking forward to your acrylic build.

I have used coralife skimmers in the past but I feel like there is better technology out there at the moment. I like cone skimmers for their space saving and simplicity... I just need to find a cheap cone skimmer that I like. SC brand cone skimmers like the SC150 might be my better choice for my system. I think I overdid it on my skimmer choice with the diablo 160.
BTW, I am also going back to feeding flake foods. It seems like every time I have ever fed anything other then flake foods I have had problems with hair or cyano. I'm going back to my old habits because I have always had success with them. I am trying new stuff and it just isn't working for me.... I guess I'm now considered "old school."

Seth,I know this is off subject but when I comment I feel like I'm talking to "The Dude" Ha ha :)
lol, I'm sure a lot of people think that. I assure you, however, that I do not have long hair. I'm too lazy to take care of long hair... lol Jeff Bridges is still one of my favorite actors to this day - not just in The Big Lebowski - but others as well.

I'm really looking forward to it as well. I think that it will be something interesting to learn and be familiar with. Probably not as much as Acrylic51 is... lol... but at least enough to know how to work with it and give some advice when necessary. Building a sump is perhaps the easiest thing to do right off the bat. I will definitely be seeking out Acrylic 51's advice on the matter in the future...
So, I priced everything that I want out - besides the photon32 unit and I can go ahead and buy everything that I am wanting, besides some corals. I am even throwing in some reef cleaners. I'll be ordering either today or tomorrow.

I understand on the skimmer, if I had to spend money I would probably buy something different, although I think I saw a new cone skimmer out by coralife but not sure of price

No worries about the double post. Alls good.
I am just trying to find a happy medium myself. I am pretty sure that adding some macro and some reef cleaners to the tank will help. Im also going to add a pink spot goby to help stir the sand some. Maybe some nassarius snails will be good to help mop up what food is left. I dont have an algae problem at all just some cyano. I guess ill have to look into addeing additional flow to the tank or something.
Ive been tweaking my calcium reactor up little by little. So far so good. Going to test my parameters tonight before bed.
I am going by the lfs thursday evening to see what fish they got in their shipment. I might add a couple new fish. Who knows. Not enough bioload in the tank to make anything to skim- we will see about that!!

Hey Seth.....What were you feeding that got you to switch away from flakes.....I don't recall you the switch of foods.....
I do buy some of what Jeremy stated as over sized; which would lead to inconsistent skimming, but possibly with a heavier bio load you might see a bit more productivity.....Just my guess on that....The only other plausible answer I would see is that there is something amiss with the skimmer pump. As you recall from our conversation and the video....the bottom of the skimmer doesn't look right IMO.....That thing should be milky white full of bubbles from the bottom up......If your interested in getting rid of the skimmer at some point let me know.....I like to tinker and I have a buddy that's upgrading tanks, and I wouldn't be hesitant to put a BB pump on the skimmer.......

Ill consider it. I am still adding three more fish to my system and the tank isnt loaded with corals jus yet. I plan on feeding lots of phyto and oyster feast so it will come in handy in the future but not right now. I feel like water changes and macroalgae will suit my needs for the time being. Ill stil be running my smaller skimmer.

I bought a nepthea off a fellow hobbyist. Its about the size of a basketball. $60 is extremely reasonable. It came on a rock that is an encrusting gorgonia. I seperated thr nepthea from thr rock and ziptied the nepthea to a smaller rock. Its now the centerpiece of the tank.
