taking a new direction

Oh, and by the way - beautiful pics. You have an awesome LFS. I'm JEALOUS! That batfish is really pretty and very unique. Too bad they have low survival rates. :(
I really like the way your tank is coming along. Keep taking pics once a month or so .... just so you can track the growth on your SPS corals...

thanks bud! i need to get a good camera again- the last one ended up in a water change bucket before i could even use it! i've just been using my iPhone and the color discrimination is for the birds.
there's a frag swap 4 hrs away in late january that i went to last year and got some good stuff. i've been checking out fragswapper and i think that on my birthday (monday) i will reserve a bunch of frags. i will periodically add new frags to my "cart" for the next month and see what i can pick up at the swap. that's the best way to go, IMO.

That's a really nice LFS!!!
And, the tank looks great too!
thanks for the compliment. i feel like it's coming around. new bulbs will be ordered next week along w/ a pH controller. i need to get that reactor fixed ASAP! i cant wait to start filling in the empty spaces with the frag swap frags.
that lfs is awesome. here are some old pics that show a bit more of the tanks and cabinetry. my hand is in some of the pics as a sizing reference.
here is one half of a 500+ gallon, check out the woodwork. pretty good for a store, eh?

here's the other half of the same tank

i'm 5'11, so there's a height referene

big ol' lion fish 2' away from front glass

silver lookdowns

biggest clam i've ever seen in a pet store. it's mantle alone was 1" thick. clam was b/w 2.5 to 3 feet long

cabinetry on smaller tanks

Sweet man! Jeez, I'm so jealous. The closest decent fish store I have to me is in New Orleans, about six hours away. There are some seven hours away in Dallas/Fortworth too. But I'de have to spend a lot of money on frags to make up for the money I'de be shelling out for gas both ways.

i'm lucky to have 3 large, independently owned stores that specialize in fish. then there are two smaller ones, the one is where i got that frag on black friday. i'm going to check out the other small one tomorrow. it's owned by a husband and wife that are in my reef club but they just do it as a side gig so the hours are weird. i also have a good old petland within a half mile of me and there's a big box pet store (not sure which one yet) going into a two-story borders that closed within a 1/4 mile of my house. as much as i hate those stores, it's nice to be able to walk my dog and go get some algae sheets or whatever. also, just to rub it in a bit, a 30 minute drive used to get me from my front door to calfo's greenhouse with time for me to grab a red bull

seth, if you are ever in pittsburgh, you and your family have a place to stay. just make sure when you visit that it's a weekend of a reef meet. i could introduce you to anthony, steve pro, and bill (beananimal).
hey traveler, where is chester county? that frag swap i'm talking about is in lancaster @ "that fish place" and then we all go over to "fishy business" afterwards. it was a great time yesteryear.

Chester Co. is in SE Penn. My town is Exton, Pa... look it up...
That fish place is about 1 hr away.

i live in pittsburgh, so i doubt you would want to make the drive for a club meet. either way, our next meet isnt until the second saturday of january (i think). do you plan on going to the frag swap? there's some good stuff on fragswapper so far.

OH MAN!!!!! I can't believe I forgot to mention this in my first post.... GREAT NEWS!!! I went to two different LFS today with my CA reactor and nobody could help me out, other than to suggest re-plumbing it or calling the manufacturer of the pump to see if they had a similar adapter. That was actually really good advice, though, because for some reason it hadn't occurred to me to call the manufacturer of the pump, just the actual reactor.
So I went to Lowes to try to find plumbing parts that would work and thankfully couldn't find anything. So while I was waiting for Janice to do some last minute gift-getting I tried Googling the pump make/model to try and find a customer support number. Google was taking too long so I figured I might as well try Pacific Coast Imports, yet again. This time I actually got through to somebody and the dude, Steve, was really helpful. I told him that I've had a heck of a time trying to get through, yada yada yada, so he gave me his cell phone number so when I call to order the part on Tuesday I won't have any problems. I'm so pumped. I would have ordered it right then, but to avoid going through what happened last time I tried to order a part from them, I figure I ought to get a pre-paid Visa with only like $15 on it. I'll order two of the connectors, just to be safe.
Now to decide on either a regular plain old pH controller or a reek keeper lite w/ SL1 module. I may actually just go with a Milwaukee SMS 122 controller for now. It's half the price and I'm not sure I would use all the other features of the RKE. I guess I'll read up a little more on it tomorrow. Some folks on here suggested I didn't get the SMS 122 but rather a pinpoint controller, but the guys from my reef club and a few of the LFS's around here swear by them. So hopefully, by the end of next week I'll have some new bulbs and a controlled CA reactor!!!

NCPARS @ That Fish Place on Saturday January 28, 2012. It's a 4 hour drive for us, but it was great last year and we feel its worth the drive from here so IMO it is def worth a 1 hr drive. Especially if you do the fragswapper thing in the meantime. I'll drop b/w $100 and $200 on fragswapper until the meet and take some change with me to pick up those frags in case i see anything while i'm there. There are some great colorful pieces already available on fragswapper for $15 that I'm going to pre order, along with some $30 ones. Hopefully I will come out of January with my SPS craving satiated for a while. Once the snow hits I spend all my time and $ on the slopes.

Why not? You better cancel what you have going on so you can make it!
I snowboard at 7 Springs. This is the first year I've waited so long before getting a season pass. They are like $706 now. Usually I get them at the end of a season for $400, but I think if I get one I will still get my $'s worth out of it. Heck, lift tickets are $70 Friday through Sunday.
