A little late on the uptake there Randy.

Yeah, I know its closing the barn door after the cows have already gotten out
, but I was curious as to if he hadn't thought of it, or deliberetly decided not to do it. And if he diliberetly decided not to do it, why not? Since I just came across the thread, I didn't read through it earlier (on of the hazards of just scanning new posts
).

Hey Z, since you're replacing the bottom glass, why didn't you just have them drill it before they tempered it, and run you're overflows through the bottom rather than out the back?
because I dont want my overflows in the bottom I considered it but I would rather just have a strainer at the top than sacrifice any tank space to a column overflow box. probably going to either use a regular basket strainer or maybe build a small toothed box to keep fish out. I want as much room as possible in this tank.

bulkheads and drillbit arrived today. I effed up, and apparantly ordered a bigger bulkhead than drill bit.
damnit I bought the wrong bit..... oh well. have to order another bit next week.

on the bright side I also got my salt today so i can stare at a box of salt for a while....... while I wait for the right bit to come in.

re-ordered the new bit and some more bulkheads.
I talked to the people at glassholes and they offered to swap out the drill bit for the correct size for no charge. awful nice of him. I told him not to worry and just ordered a bigger bit and some small bulkheads, i'm sure I can find a use for them in the future (think closed loop or seperatly plumbed fuge etc)
I should have the silicone and some pictures up by monday night of resealing the tank. maybe a pic of drilling a prcatice tank. hopefully if everything goes to plan.

I have had a couple issues with Glass-holes as well and they have ALWAYS be soooo nice to replace it or just give me a new one. I highly recommend them to anyone! This looks like so much fun btw!

I tell you this tank has been plauged with set backs and hold ups....
well i finally made some headway today, I built the little bubble room in my garage that will allow me a smaller space to heat for the siliconing. I have the silicone, hopefully this weekend some progress will actually be made. I'm getting sick of getting caught up in life with too much to do.
there will be pictures soon, I know how boring build threads are without them, and I apologize to anyone that keeps looking in and is dissapointed.

You can get your butt blistered on here for not having pictures.

Tagging along and enjoying the read! Im with ya on the life getting in the way thing. If it wasnt for the checks I would quit my job and just reef. By the way quitting now will come with health benefits.......

OK the As-promised pictures of PROGRESS

went out this morning after making sure the heater and the tent could hold temp in our 6 degree nights the temp was 43 in the tent. thats 3 degrees more than I needed for minimum working temp
I added one more space heater to ensure the temp wont dip below freezing while the silicone is curing, the temp moved upwards to 50 far safer (more comfortable for working too).
a word of advice for those intending to replace panes of glass on fish tanks get a second set of hands for placeing the panes, it was a royal pain in the backside putting it on and hitting it dead on the first shot. but I succeeded.
once i got the pane placed, I applied a bead on the bottom and sides for holding the bands in place. once the bands were installed I sealed both the bottom and top lip of the bands to keep salt creep out from between the bands and the glass. definatly one of my pet peeves of most fish tanks.
ok without further blather the pics.

keep in mind I still have to flip the tank and seal the inside once it cures,
as well as cut out the old corner silicone and reseal all four corners.
wich I shall do tommorrow. I hate waiting.
I will also paint the rear pane I may also paint the wall end pane as well.
if I am lucky and my 3 inch drill bit shows up I may get to drill the tank as well.

ok more progress, I went out this morning laid the tank on its face, and cut out the old silicone from the four corners. I applied silicone to the bottom four corners for the bottom pane, as well as the four verticle corners. once I find my paint (its here some where) I will run out and paint the back.
picture 1 old corners
picture 2 removing silicone
picture 3 new corners
I totally forgot how fumy working with your head inside a tank full of off-gassing ascetic acid is. nothing like holding your breathe for as long as possible while you work then standing up, hyperventilating to saturate your blood with oxygen, then going back in to work as long as possible, and repeate untill done. but the tank is now resealed, 24 hours from now it will be able to hold water. I need my drill bit and bulkheads.

just tracked my drill bit, they are on their way to my house right now. as soon as my mailman shows up I will have them. I hate usps, even with priority mail they sat in scarborough maine for 4 days before getting sorted and shipped.
4 days, WTF? I can see a day or two but four days just sitting around.

the bit is here
. unfortunatly because I painted I cant drill untill the paint dries. so I have to wait untill either tonight or tommorrow to drill. oh well. the whale passer bulkheads should be awesome for my overflows. the plumbing is shaping up in my mind. I am going to have 2 returns and 2 overflows. the overflows at opposite ends of the tank and the returns in the middle pointing slightly towards the ends so I'll end up with a sort of figure 8 return and drain pattern. which should be nicely disrupted by my circulation pumps.

well I was going to practice on some smaller tanks first, but I watched a couple videos on drilling glass and decided not to bother.
Sucess!
I have 2 bulkheads in my tank now. way too easy. most people use plumbers putty to wall in the water.
I just used silicone because I had it. rather than going out and spending more money on something I am barely ever going to use.
