the next immediate step is to get the glass cut for my braces. some how I seem to have overlooked this step while getting excited about installing the base drilling and painting. no biggie.
soon, the hard parts happen. I need to precut everything for my stand so I can tear down the tank, install the stand and swap it out and set it back up immediatly. this is probably going to be my biggest challenge.
the second most challenging part is going to be changing my lights. I will have to tear apart my fixture, then retrofit my parts into the new hanging canopy. I will have very limited time to do so since I cant take a week with no lights to retro fit the lighting.
plumbing will be relatively easy since I can justy fill the tank below the overflow level to get it circulating in tank and run it sumpless for a few days while I drill and plumb my sumps.

thanks, this tank was definatly a POS when I got it. I guess it just shows how a little TLC and effort can turn almost any pos into a treasure.
I made a little progress on the stand. doing the math on the stand height, and what I want to fit under it I may be in for a serious dissapointment. because the tank is so tall (27" overall) to keep the viewing area where I want it my stand cant be as tall as I need. otherwise the top of the tank will be over shoulder height. I may have to put my sumps in the basement. as much as I dont want to. its just not convinient. damn. going to have to brain storm some more before I make any unalterable changes.
I may have to reset my RO closet and use that for my sumps and put my mixing station under my tank since I need very little clearance for that. it would mean a lot more plumbing but is definatly do able.

Is it just the skimmer that will cause the stand to have to be so high? If so could you build a "closet" next to the stand where part of the sump with the skimmers would be offset to that side?
Just a thought.

its a good thought. I am still kicking around what I am going to do about sumps etc. I had an idea with my multiple sumps but reality is intervening in a serious way. I will still end up with chained sumps but it wont be the way I originally intended.
I have less than a week to figure it out. I intend to do the swap sunday.

ahh nothing like a cold beer for a brain storm. I was just sitting back drinking a cold killians, when an epiphany struck me, on how to plumb my sumps successfully with the least amount of headaches. $20 in parts later I am ready for sunday. I will only have one sump running untill i can spare a few more bucks for the second section of plumbing. I simply had to reverse my natural inclination to have my overflow drop into the left side of my sump. I dont know why but I like flow going from left to right through sumps. I'm going to have to reverse it for this one, so one of my sumps wioll sit beside the tank and send dlow back under the stand to the last sump. which means I will probably have to use a smaller sump than I originally planned for buyt maybe nopt due to the set out from the wall. but I will be able to swap out tanks and set up the first sump this weekend.
pictures will be available once I start.

but anyhow. I now have a perfect oppourtunity to gauge exactly how much RO water my unit puts out. i started filling a 55g tank with ro. so I can time it out and gauge exactly how much ro water my unit produces.
I hate waiting. the way the water changeover is going to work is I am going to keep most of my old water at first, move everything over then do a 100% water change on whats left of the old water. then fill the tank and sumps with new water 55g at a time. so the overall water process will take about 3-4 days even though the changeover will only take 2.

ok just got home from work a 12 1/2 hour day. checked the progress of teh Ro unit.
12 inches by 48 inches by 6 inches of water equals about 14.96 gallons in just over 12 hours.. from a 50gpd unit. of course the water is just above freezing coming out of the tap here in maine so that impedes the rate quite a bit. and my water pressure isnt the best. this is going to be a slow fill. hmm
brings to mind thoughts on the water change station and modifications I am going to have to make to ensure I have water ready when I need it for changes. I will probably just set up an overdflow box in my Ro holding station to flow down to the mixing tank so I can just leave my ro unit on for a couple days and fill both the Ro top off resivour and the salt mixing station. easy enough. at least I dont have to worry about it overdflowing the 55g mixing tank while I sleep tonight.
