1. well first of all you really dont need a skimmer. it really doesnt help. as long as you do proper water changes you are good. doing a refugium is the best way to go. IMO.
2. remove everything you got in the back. meaning the sponge, the top floor and anything else back there.
3. leaving the bottom false floor, put some chaetomorpha ontop of it. or you can put LR rubble on the false floor and chaeto ontop of that. BUT WHATEVER you do dont put the LR on the floor. put it on the false floor. so it can get flow.
4. Make sure the water is always ontop of the chaeto.
5. Next, buy some chemipure-elite and purigen. place the purigen in the first or third chamber and same thing for the chemipure.
6. for light you can get any submersible light or the AZOO PALM LIGHT
7. enjoy your refugium!
So since ill be adding the Chemipure Elite and the Purigen there is no need for the factory little BioCube filter w/ the built in carbon? Would it hurt to maybe custom fit a filter sponge, or the one from the 2nd chamber to catch the big debris before getting into the fuge?
Im also looking to get some more suction from the inlets, i would achieve this "im guessing" by upgrading the stock pump? Could i use a Maxi-Jet 900 or 1200 or would the repacement have to be another little box shaped submersible like the original?

Well after going to 3-4 Lps and Home Depot and Lowes i couldnt find a small clamp on light fixture that used compact floursent bulbs for my fuge. Guess i will have to order it online. Did find the Chemipure Elite, Purigen and a Maxi-jet 1200 though. Lps was out of Chaeto for the moment. So it looks like my Fuge Plans are on hold until i find a light order it and get it in.

I did see a few of those swirly compact bulbs, but the were all rated 4100K or lower. Dont i need 6500k for best growth? Seems only the stright dual pin compact floursent bulbs were rated higher than 4100k. I couldnt find a fixture that took them.
I have been seeing a few ideas that involve a submersible light but the bulbs tend to burn out fast because of the saltwater, and a short would be very bad!
With the walmart fixture how big was it? Could i leave filter hood on still, or would i have to take it off no matter what i got?

It was just a clip on desk lamp with adjustable arm.....IDK if you can (or would want to) leave the hood on the fuge

YAY! Thanks for the last comment Meowzer your a lifesaver!
-One 12" black clip on light $9.99
-Pack of two 60watt 6500K swirly light bulbs $8.99
-Spending hours traveling all over town in search of a light only to find it one mile down the road at Wal-Mart... PRICELESS!

Can't wait to see if the lfs has some Chaeto in tommorrow. If not i know another lfs "a bit out the way" that i will check. Also need to pick up a small low end piece of live rock that i can smash for my rubble. Ill post picks of the fuge if i complete it tommorrow.

Judging by the rock, you shopped at Marks and the "a bit out of the way" is Rons shop. Ron always has chaeto and is worth the drive.

I'm near the LSU lakes. Ron owns Reef Coral, it's about twice as far for me, but the service(and honesty) at his shop compared to Marks more than makes up for it. Check out lareefclub .com, it's a local club where club you can get some pretty good deals on used equipment. What livestock are you planning on keeping?

Well went to both Lfs today in search of chaeto but unfortunately they both were out! Looks like my Fuge has to wait. I did pick me up 10 links and a Y of Lock Line so i can direct my outlets flow better . I had to custom fit it to the BioCube because it was smaller links then what can on the stock outlet.
The guy at Reef Coral "Ron i think his name is" said that if it was his tank he would keep the Bioballs and not go with the Fuge. He said Fuges only beneifit "large" tanks. But i dont know about this, i think any means of a natural approach outway any mechanical approach. What do yall think?

Alright scored a 200watt MarineLand Stealth on the bay last night for $26 thats less than half of what they cost in stores. 200 watts should heat up 3 gallons of water pretty quick for my water changes.
Also got a question...
Is it ok to mix different kinds of salt into the same tank? I bought some high end salt mix "forget the name atm" and used it to fill my tank. I also bought a box of Instant Ocean the same day i bought my tank and dont want it to just go to waste. So is it ok to mix?

That's a BIG heater for 3 gallons of water!!!!
You do know you need to mix your salt water and met it "mix" for a good 24 hours right?
Put it in a container with a powerhead

Really 24 Hours never heard that? I though just fill a bucket with 3-5 Gallons of RO/DI water, throw in a powerhead and a heater and salt. Warm water to same temp as tank then add slowly to tank "making sure all the salt is disolved first".
Thought it could be done in 30 min to an hour...
Mainly got the big heater because it was so cheap "same price as the 100 watt actually", and if i ever need to warm water quickly for any reason i can.
