Vodka Dosing.

Been vodka dozing in tanks for almost 3 months. I am using 16ml of vodka daily in the reef that has a total water volume of about 300 gallons ( dt and sump). My nitrates are consistently at 5. I am ok with this as I want to keep the macroalgae and am afraid if I increase the vodka and have consistently '0' nitrates I will lose all the macroalgae.
I do not know how this will work for other people but am happy that I can heavily feed the inverts without spiking the nitrates and having to do frequent large water changes.

Hey Al thank you for the update. Have you noticed any changes - godd or bad - in your coral?
Henry, I would say little change in corals. I have mostly softies, mushrooms and LPSs in the reef though.

My nitrates are consistently at 5.
Al everyone I talk to that has employed vodka dosing my self included has had their nitrates go to zero and then stabilize at 5 it seems to be the norm

well...
i'm wondering if i should start this. i honestly haven't tested my trates in a while, but i've got cyano growing in the sump and my dsb (along parts of the glass) has turned a black color so i'm starting to worry...I get good sps growth but not the extension or colors y ou guys are showing..
i'm going to read up some more on this, but think this is pretty interesting.

Do read as much as you can Ren. This is not for everyone me thinks. Very touchy as you can over do it and cause all kinds of nastiness.
Here are a couple of pics I took last night after reading about exposure control on the camera. All this time I kept thinking I was just stupid about white balance settings and washing out color on the pics but now see that a lot can be done to get true color using exposure settings.

These pictures are more true to color than previous posts. Remember my goal was a low nutrient system so that I could feed the tank more and get better polyp extension and color from my SPS coral. I think that I am achieving that now.

Is it getting irritating always having to dose the tank? I looked into vodka dosing myself....I did tons of research. I just can't get over the fact that it needs to be done every day at the same time. And if you miss a dose, from what I have read, you can have major consequences.
Awesome changes by the way!! Great color and extension!!

Not really a problem I do it when I get home from work, 6 drops vodka, 2 drops of Brightwell Amino Acid, feed the tank. I have missed days with no consequences. Gone out of town for 4 days on business no dosing. Missed 2 days at a time on short trips etc. Would like to read what you have on missing doses can you remember where you saw it?

it's just another habit i'd have to get into.
My problem is i've got some nasty algaes growing. In my RR overflow, it looks like i have hair algae growing where the water overflows into the drain area, and IN the drain area i've got a spongey nasty algae. In the sump, i've got some hair algae sorta, and cyano has started to grow on my chaeto, and i have that spongey algae as well. the lights make this algae STINK when exposed to air and my wife is getting ticked.
I did a quick po4 test when i got home, and suprrisingly it shows zero. i'm thinking this is actually a false zero, else my algaes wouldn't be growing like they do.

I had that hair type algae on one of the baffles in the back chamber. It is completely gone, and I had to rip it out with each water change weekly. I mean I would clean it completely and it would be back the next week.
The problem, if you view it that way, with an ultra low nutrient system is that all the algae dies. So if you have and critters that are strickly herbivorous well no herb!! Gotta supplement. A small price to pay in my mind. Plus if you like the look of some algae in the tank you could go with some Halimeda or other calcareous type algae. Have you read some of the stuff over on that central reef site? There is a great article in Reef keeping magazine too.
