I guess we didn't share and care enough with Hitler, Mussolini and Tojo. If we would have just given them a BIIIIIGGGGG hug, then they would've been better behaved. And Iran and North Korea just need some luvin and handouts, too, while we're at it. If we all just push daisies into our enemies rifle barrel, we all can live happily ever after. Good Lord, when I think he can't be any more inane and obtuse, he goes and proves me wrong. This guy is Stalin's subversion personified.
<sigh>
Of all folks not to understand what I said....
"Share your toys and play nice" works both ways. I don't consider it "playing nice" to ignore the helpless being oppressed by a bully.
I thought the "firepower" statement would have suggested that...

I agree with you Slice-100%. It was the response that Bionic made after that I was responding to. I guess I should have quoted him before I typed my response in. You are on the same wave length as me in this regard.

Flower, how would someone selling a gun know if the buyer is unstable?
A barkeep can tell when someone is intoxicated.
Exactly the problem. I'm sure if a gun shop encountered someone who was obviously off his rocker, the last thing he'd do is sell that person a gun. In fact, he'd likely call the police.

They are required to contact the police or ATF if someone is suspicious or appears unstable. That's what they did when the straw buyers were purchasing guns for the cartels. They told the ATF they didn't want to sell to them, but were ordered to by the feds. So, the government ain't the best arbiter of who should or shouldn't be buying firearms.

I understand what you mean, and there is no way to really KNOW...but a basic questionnaire would help...if you ask a simple what is the gun for..some folks can give an off answer or pause or something to give a hint. You can talk to a person for 5 minutes and tell if they are a little off somehow. I just think that any hint and the gun shop owner should have the right to refuse...maybe they already do..I don't know. I know I can talk to someone at a bus stop or at the restaurant counter and a crazy is pretty obvious. A simple "I'm not going to sell a gun to you" kind of statement, and the unhinged will go into a tirade. You can say just a little something, and watch the reaction. I know that even then it could be impossible to tell...but at least an effort would be made. I have never purchased a gun, or even walked into a gun shop...maybe they do already have a method to weed the normal from the nuts.
I'm all for having to take a psychiatric test to determine if a license should be given to carry a gun, along with health test for brain tumors and any bipolar problems, and any reports made to the police for disorderly conduct, spousal abuse allegations...road rage... any thing that would show a dangerous character. A CDL license to drive is revoked for anything a person has on record, even when not driving a truck....a gun is too dangerous to allow anyone to just go into a store and get one. I know the bad guys buy them off the streets, and the only ones such a law would affect are the law abiding people. However if anything off you do affects your license, folks may be a little nicer to each other and a little more careful to protect their character, if even one unhinged person is eliminated from the count...it's worth it.
I do think people have the right to carry a weapon...but only if the person is mentally fit, any nuts in the household should also be considered, I know if you have teenagers the insurance for people go automatically up...There are pepper sprays, tazers and other means to stop a bad guy besides a deadly gun. Let the crazies and the homes of the crazies use the other stuff to try and protect themselves....carrying a gun for protection should be a conditional right, and a person should have to maintain the highest standard of personal character and that includes everyone in the house to be allowed by law to have one.
That is just my opinion for what it's worth...and I know it will never happen...but at least I had my say.

Unless you've been forcibly institutionalized there is no way to know you are a wackado. (Unless they read post on SWF.com) :)
You are not required to do much of anything to sell a gun. There's no paper trail on most of my stuff. Traded a fish aquarium for the glock and sawed off shot gun LOL!

You going to require all those same tests for someone to drive a car?

My feeling would be that it is no one's business why I am buying a gun. No one buying a gun is going to say that they plan to off someone or do a mass killing. Actually, you can buy guns, including ARs and AKs off the internet sight unseen.

But they can only be delivered to an FFL dealer, unless it's a classified ad private sale. I look at it this way: bad people will always get guns. As long as tyrannical bureaucrats and politicians leave me alone so I can defend myself, I don't worry or sit around wringing my hands thinking about it. BTW, there have been 3x more mass shootings in the year since The People's Republic of Kalifornia banned citizens carrying firearms. Another abject failure of liberal strongarm laws, that will be followed up with more unConstitutional gun bans I'm sure.

Even if it's a classified ad it's only legal to ship through UPS (not sure about FedEx) and it must be received by a FFL holder.

LOL...I knew it was just a pipe dream...However Beth...I think it is everyones business WHY a person wants a gun, and if it isn't to harm others it shouldn't be too much to just ask why...for example: The people who fear a take over by the government and stock pile them should be stopped, what does a normal person need with a machine gun or 20 of them? If guns could be successfully regulated, it would have already been done....I have no solution.
And yep I think they should do some extra testing before giving out a drivers license too. My sister has a valid license, and she should never be allowed behind the wheel of a car. She got mad once and almost ran into a brick wall, thankfully HaShem saw fit to make her too sick physically to drive, the only plus I have ever considered for whatever it is that ails her (mystery illness)....I adore my kid sister...but her mind has been gone off the deep end since she was in her 20s. Bipolar people should never be given a drivers license....they go from sweet to enraged in seconds for no reason.
LOL...a parenting class..... It should at the very least be a manditory class from 7th grade all the way thru high school. Birth control is not all there is to it. Some schools have a baby egg or key controlled doll...but that hardly touches the surface of what is really involved in child care....In a perect world....perhaps once the pregnancy is confirmed by a doctor, a parenting class should be manditory.

Peace through superior firepower works. Just because you have it doesn't mean you have to use it. How do you think we stayed out of war with the USSR all those years?
As far as home protection goes come break into my house and find out. I legally don't have to even give you a warning. The act of forcibly entering my house gives me the right to blow you out of your shoes. In fact in this state if I catch someone who has broken into my house as they are trying to leave with say my laptop I would be legal to shoot them in the back. If someone walked in my open door I wouldn't be legal to shoot them but if the picked up my wallet and tried to leave I can shoot them. Uninvited plus committing another crime equals right to use deadly force. Same if I were at work. People go to jail for not knowing the law. Walking down the street is a little different. You have to be able to make the case you felt threatened. All make my days laws really did was remove the burden of proof on homeowners or someone at work under certain circumstances.
We have Castle Doctrine here. Some guy got prosecuted last year for shooting a supposed intruder outside his home. Used to be if you shot someone outside, the cops told you to drag them back indoors before they showed up...

You betcha! I had to renew my drivers license just last week. I'm finishing up getting my license, and I look to my right and I see this VERY OLD gentleman standing up at the counter, and he starts talking to the lady about getting his drivers license renewed. I overheard the lady say "90 years old! Wow! Congratulations!" She proceeded with filling out the paperwork, took his picture, and he turned and motioned to this elderly lady to bring him his walker. They were leaving at the same time as me, so I held the door open so he could get outside. I was expecting this woman to get into the driver's side. but "grandpa" toddled over to that door, opened it, got inside, and the lady grabbed the walker and put it in the trunk. It was comical but sad seeing how long it took, and how slow he was going to leave the parking lot. Sorry to say, the gentleman was an accident waiting to happen...
If I were a worker at a DPS office, and someone walked up to the counter with a cell phone stuck to their ear, or was looking down texting on their phone, I'd just say "Sorry. DENIED. Next..."

So should you have to justify why you belong to a religion? People who own "Machine guns" don't worry me in the least because the licensing regulations to own one in the few states that allow it is so stringent. If you read the federalist papers one of the reasons they included the second amendment is an armed populous was seen as a check on a tyrannical government.

All this gun talk (and a lot of thinking and discussing with my wife over the last month) has got me ready to excessive my 2nd Amendment rights. Looking to pick up either a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 to keep in the house. Anyone got any other suggestions for an inexpensive shotgun for home defense use?

After my wreck I had to use a walker for a few months. Didn't affect my ability to drive in the least. Well, I don't drive a stick anymore, dead left leg kinda makes that tough LOL!

Those are the two best choices. Mossberg probably has more options. I'd just get a standard stock with the shortest barrel available.
