Thought I would post some pics before bed tonight. Guess who came out to say hi after many weeks?
Remember this cute little guy 5 weeks ago?

Well, he has grown up. He nows looks like a vicious, Terminator T-800 crab. Check out those scary red eyes. His name is Arnold.

and look at this little fella, looks like he had a nassarius for lunch and took his shell. When I went to go buy a replacement snail, i bought a bunch of empty shells that they are enjoying and trying on now instead of live snails.

+1 on the gorilla not a friendly hitchiker. Nice purple shrooms too, I like em. Your heat issue can be remedied by a small fan blowing through the top of the lid. When I had the PC lights on my Cube I opened the rear portion of the tank and ran a small clip on lamp. Prob solved, not sure if it will work for your application but if it helps thats what I did.

Not ready to call it a Gorilla crab, here is a picture of one.

That said it is still a crab and IMO should be banished to the sump!!!!

haha, i knew you guys would say that. It does look like an evil crab, i know the rock he hangs out on so if its time to take him out i'll know where to look. i'll research some more about them, but i got to tell you, crabs are one of my favorite creatures, so he'll stay for now. I dont have a sump, so i dont know what i would do with him. i dont want to kill him.
Speaking of which, my diamond goby sadly passed away over night. He hasnt been doing well lately i think because of my temperature fluctuations (he was doing fine and eating well before that). He was a really cool fish

Thanks for the tips Perfect Dark, it looks to be like my heater was the problem, its works fine now and the temp is at a stable 77 again but im going to get a replacement for peace of mind.

Sorry to hear that about your goby. Never cool to lose a fish. Hopefully once you get your heater issue resolved you can try another fish. I would probably wait a little bit though since you did just have a death. Might not be a bad idea to run some carbon and do a water change. As you can tell I am always overly cautious.

No I agree with you spanko, the ID gorilla was more of me saying not good to have. I actually think it is a red eyed stone crab or Red Eyed Reef Crab, Eriphia ferox, Family Eriphiidae, but I am by far not an expert.

i think you are right PD, i googled it and the first site i checked it looked exactly like that type of crab. Looks to be a type of snail killer.
thanks Subie for the advice. I'm going to wait until after christmas for the next fish which hopefully will be the six-line wrasse.

I posted in the ID section but adding to my journal as well. There is a small colony of aiptasia on a rock, about 8 heads or so. I'm pretty sure its young aiptasia I just wanted to know what you guys think it is? This stuff is really small still and the peppermint shrimp I have isnt touching it. So how would i get rid of it when its this small? It's only on this one small rock. thanks for the help.

Cranberry told me they are Colonial Hydroids, similiar to aiptasia but not an anemone.
I have read that people will burn them off with lighters, torches or boil the rock. Some recommend smearing kalk paste on the area.
Too bad, i love cool and unusual stuff, but since its a nuisance, im going to nuke it.

hey whisk, can you send me a link to were you got your fans from> I need to get some replacements for my 24 aquapod... Have you had any problems with the new ones you have?

Sure, i'll PM you in a minute. So far they seem like they are working ok, its tough to say how the heat is because my heater has been acting strangely and have been getting temp flucs from it.
I did end up turning the fans around so they blow in instead of out.

I nuked the colonial hydroids with an open candle, they went crispy in seconds. Let's hope thats the last of them.
I went to the Bay Area Reef club today and met a few local folks and got a feel how the club was. Seem like a nice group of folks who were happy to share their saltwater stories and frags. I met up with McKevinFang there, nice to meet ya man!
I stopped by the LFS on the way home and they had a small frag of frogspawn which was cheap and small and just the type I been wanting so I couldnt pass it up. Also picked up a 2nd thermometer, a coralife digital. Here are some latest and greatest pics.
