Great story Flower! The more I learn about these pesky hitchhikers makes me so happy that I finally have a QT set up. I recklessly didn't use one the first 8 months. Thank goodness I have one now!
My story is a little similar to Flowers, accept with reverse type of ending...
When I first set up my tank I got this beautiful piece of live rock, it had some Coraline algae and the employee at the LFS noticed that it had some type of coral attached to it. When I got it home and placed in it my tank it opened up into these beautiful little polyps. I was so excited that I got 'free' coral! I took some pictures of it and posted them on SWF.com for identification. I learned that it was Protopalythoa ''Button Polyp'. My hubby and I were so excited about the little coral, and we watched it each day for signs of growth. After about a month, we noticed this strange little pink worm emerging from the rock that had the polyps. I thought it was a fire worm that would eat my precious little polyps. So we tried everything to get rid of it. I got tweezers and waited until the lights were out and tried to grab it. The monster was to fast. I had nightmares about it coming out and eating my precious polyps, multiplying and eventually taking over my tank. I also tried the hyper-salinity method twice and both times it failed. I finally gave up and like a newbie I threw the rock away with my precious little zoas on it :(
A little while later I learned that the 'evil' pink worm wasn't actually the coral eating type of fire worm, but actually a pretty harmless and helpful bristle worm. Lesson learned......don't give up!

Reminds me of another non-fish related story...A neighber of mine...she was telling me her cat had kittens, and every single one of them were blind. She had her husband drown them because she didn't have the heart to. You should have have seen her face when I told her all kittens are born blind and the eyes open in about 10 days.

I had never met someone who had never seen newborn kittens or puppies in their 50s. I think baby rabbits are born blind too. I just can't imagine a child growing up and never being exposed to critters to the point they wouldn't know that...or at least heard about it from other kids. She was the sweetest person you ever would want to meet, and she really thought the kittens were deformed and should be put down to prevent them from suffering. The only reason she said anything was because she was shocked every single kitten in the litter was born that way.

Get to know me. You can't handle the truth
Wet Carpet (for Snake)
My wife one day calls me at work to tell me that my little tank in bottom is making a loud noise. I told here to unplug it I will look at it when I come home. Two minutes later she calls back to tell me that a hose came loose and it pump water all over her carpet. You guys think this the end to this story, not buy a long run. This happen last spring, work was busy and also my life, so my tank was the first to suffer. I didn’t do a water change for over 3 months. I did top off the tank and feed the fish, but that was all. I stand in the same spot to feed the fish which slightly of to right of center. That little tank is my QT it sits in the bottom right side of my stand, which gets no attention until I’m thinking of getting a new fish or pumps water on my wife’s carpet. After fixing the problem and clean up the water (I soaked it up with towels) Theresa was going to get the carpets cleaned anyways. Only 5 or so gallons pumped out and it didn’t effect my spot were I stood to feed the fish, so all was good. A month goes by and I check to see if that spot was dry, to my surprise it was still wet (now I’m concerned). Checked my QT everything was running normal, checked my DT no water on the stand. My conclusion was that we had a very wet spring and my foundation wall cracked and leaking (had one B4 in my daughter room), checked the foundation at the corner of our house and sure enough there was a crack visible. My chose was simple fix it myself which lasted 5 years the last time I did it or call the professionals to hydro seal it which is still lasting over 10 years. Did I mention also during the spring we were having a lot of power outages, no, ok now I did. Well it now going on 4 months and I haven’t done a water change, I’m getting worried. So prepare to do the change, pull the plug on my return pump to let the water flow back down into sump. You say why don’t I just have hole in the supply line to break the seal, my system is old that doesn’t work. Don’t worry I have all figured out to how high the level need to be in sump so when the pump is off it doesn’t over flow the sump and get the carpet all wet. Have you figured it out yet? Your right, in my hast while toping off my DT I was never checking to see were the water in the sump was. So ever time there was a power outage my sump would spill gallons of water in to the bottom of my stand. Which then leak to floor and on to my wife’s carpet. I guess I don’t need to have my foundation hydro sealed, good thing I didn’t tell the wife we had a crack in our foundation, she would wonder why they never came out to fix it.

I have a question: Are the stories limited to just reefkeeping, or can they be all marine life in general? Can it be a story about something that happened on here?

As long as it is saltwater it is worthy of entering the contest, otherwise a good story is always a good story and we share it anyway...Well unless it's a sad story about kittens.

What makes you think it will be gone? I am messing with my reef tank to change it into a cold marine...yep it looks like a possible story forming...should I take pictures of how cloudy the water is after removing the rock, which has to be removed to even get to the fish, that I now can't see. Niether can they....one tried to swim into my granddaughter glove cuff to hide..

Alright, in honor of this thread and to not let it die, I will throw in more story.
This is 2002 or 3 that I first started into this hobby in my 10 gallon tank.
I have purchased 3 pound of live rock as a center rock and thought it was the coolest thing. It was from a live rock farm from key west and it had craziest colors and all kind of sponges growing from it and along with it came a small clam that was encrusted into the rock, a crab, a snail and some type of BIG worm. Not knowing what all those were, I went back to LFS following off day and inquired about them. I found out it was a bristle worm and that I should take them out because they will spread and won't be pretty for my tank.
Hearing that, I went back home, got ready for work and searched for the worm and dove in.
Problem:
I wasn't told that they had spikes come out as a defensive mechanism. I jumped at the surprise of the pain and nearly fell off the chair that was on.
Moral of the story?
Research even the pests of the tanks.

Did you start your build thread? I will defiantly want to see pictures. Have you tried the Shed Aquarium web site, they have cold water tanks there. Maybe they have info about them. The one I remeber the most is this huge cold water anemone tank

Flower - I agree with Jack, please create a build thread and take ALOT of pics.

It will be fun!! you know I was looking back my old pic from my thread and I was so surprised at the growth and improvement of my tank and it's inhabitants.
