    Triggers

Harlequin sweetlips are listed on a lot of sites as "expert only." Just thought I'd throw that out there. Also, I think that's a pretty heavy stocking list you've got there, especially for a reef tank.

    Should I add an anemone???

Holy cow, what type of anemones are you all talking about???? Mine doesn't even sting me. I don't rub my face on it or anything, but it has definitely touched my hands and arms many times over the years, and it doesn't even itch, let alone burn or sting. Is this something like how some people...

What happened to cause all fish to die after 2 years?

That is wonderful! I showed that picture to my son and he flipped! Maybe someday. Sorry for the thread digression, kleake.

What happened to cause all fish to die after 2 years?

Yes, you're right, kleake was gone, but I think algae had been an issue for a while. Maybe the pump shutting down was the straw that broke the camel's back. Like I said, I'm just offering slightly educated guesses. I don't have much of a fancy set-up, but we do have a generator. We lost...

    Should I add an anemone???

I was just reading through this thread and thought I'd throw in my two cents. I've had a BTA for around six or seven years, I think. It's been a while. It's been moved twice. While I guess there's always a risk, it sounds like you have done your research and have the experience and a nice...

What happened to cause all fish to die after 2 years?

Having a small amount of algae is possibly okay, and macro-algae is beneficial, but an abundance of micro-algae of any kind depletes oxygen levels. During the day when lights are on, the algae releases oxygen during their photosynthesis process, but they continue to respire on a cellular level...

What happened to cause all fish to die after 2 years?

I'd run some carbon for a few days for sure. I've never had a coral banded shrimp, so I couldn't say. I've always heard that shrimp are sensitive to changes in water parameters, but who knows? Maybe some things they are sensitive to and some things they can tolerate pretty well.

Are you running carbon? That will help get any kind of toxin or chemicals out of there.

What happened to cause all fish to die after 2 years?

I don't have a sump, so hopefully someone else will chime in here about that. The only thought I had was if something in your tank is dying--like an anemone--I think they can release toxic chemicals. Maybe that would cause that foaming reaction or harm your other tank inhabitants????? There's...

What happened to cause all fish to die after 2 years?

I just recently realized that I haven't restocked a cleanup crew in a LONG time, so I ordered some. How are you doing on crabs and snails? Algae takes a while to come on, and it will take a while to go away. Make sure you have enough flow and plenty of surface agitation. Get back into good...

What happened to cause all fish to die after 2 years?

I also have a 75 and have had it for several years. Like you, I got a little lax on maintenance for a while, and as a result, algae started to take over--nice, long, green algae. Once I got back into changing water a couple of times a month things improved. My main issue was that intakes were...

Red alge how to remove it?

If I could throw in my 2 cents, I would like to say your tank actually looks pretty clean to me. I agree about getting rid of flake food. I ran out once and used some flakes while waiting on my usual brand of pellets to arrive, and in just a few days it caused an algae bloom. It craps up...

    The Lifespan of Sand

The reef packages for sale here look really good to me--lots of variety! I don't know what I was thinking--I haven't added any new inverts to the tank for a long time, and once I started looking today there aren't a whole lot I can see. I'm going to get a reef package from here ASAP, which...

    LED lighting, Spectrum question

Those are nice--I'm not sure about the way it looks when it's a hanging fixture. Thanks everyone for the input!

    LED lighting, Spectrum question

Great question. I'm going to have to get a new fixture regardless, and so I was just wondering about the LEDs. I like the slim design, and who wouldn't love the fact that they consume less energy and are quieter? That's my biggest complaint with the MH fixture that I have. In other words, I...

    LED lighting, Spectrum question

Thanks! Since my tank is 48" long, how does a 24" fixture work? I assume you would get two of them to provide enough light in the tank?

    LED lighting, Spectrum question

Well, I did say my clownfish "and their host," meaning my anemone. Actually it's two anemones, since it split a few years back, but the two pieces are still side by side and the clowns hang out in both. I've had these same fish and anemone for several years. The anemone started under CF and...

    LED lighting, Spectrum question

Oh, and I almost have to have a tank-mounted fixture, because I have a very high ceiling over the tank, and it would be weird to have to suspend one from that high up. And there is no light in the world worth moving that tank again!

    LED lighting, Spectrum question

Also, I don't have a reef set-up. I do have that colt and then the anemone. I've always sort of been of the opinion that anemones aren't great in a true reef aquarium. I'm sure others would disagree, but for me, I'd rather have the fish and the anemone. Just my clownfish pair and their host...

    LED lighting, Spectrum question

A LOT of the reviews of the Marineland fixture mention lights going out after only a very short period of time, and on several different sites I read different problems with the power supply. The only up side is that Marineland seems to have pretty good customer service, but still, how much...
