Well you have the rite idea, thats the way i do mine. The small dia hose has to go into the U-pipe where the air bubble is, both sides of the U-tube should have water in it up to the middle ,then you put the end of the small hose up into the air bubble then suck out the air and it should start...

I had the exact problem. first thing is you have to make sure the hose going from the main tank to the refugium is straight down if it is too long it has to be replaced with a shorter one. next thing put a piece of sponge in the overflow box where the water goes down to the sump. next walk away...

miaheatlvr. That part works great i can adjust it where i want to. But it leaks around where it slides up and down. So i have to turn down the air going to it which stops the bubbles from coming out of the skimmer. Rite now i have a rag around it but have to wring out the rag every other day.
