    Seahorse Tank-Newbie Hobbyist

Torno--thanks for correcting me.. I reread my post and it does read as though I was implying to use BBs as a main food staple. I only feed BBS 2 or 3 times a week. The rest of the time my ponies get a variety of foods in addition to the BBS (which is mainly for the mandarin, who on occasion...

    Seahorse Tank-Newbie Hobbyist

I know I'm gonna get flammed for this but here goes. I used to have a 90 gal with 125 lbs of LR. I had several fish and a mandarine . About 6 months ago my over zealous and very large dog accidently ran into the tank breaking out one side. Luckily I was home and had an empty 37. after...

    curing live rock?

I used the trash can method. Actually used 2 cans. In Can #1 I put a heater, a mag 9 with a modified closed loop/spray bar with 3 3/4" outlets, and filled it with 1.025 salt water. In Can #2 I mixed up some salt water with a heater and a couple of cheap power heads. After a couple of days I...

may be a stupid question, but?

Did you a plan for the 55? While your 125 is cycling you could get the 55 setup as a fuge/sump. Just a thinking out loud.

    Live Rock From This Site

It doesn't really matter where you get your live rock online. You should always cure it. I know some sites claim to sell fully cured live rock but there will be die off in transit. IMHO unless you get your rock locally and can pick it up, cure it. You can do it just by putting it in a clean...

    Live Rock question

I agree with changing the CC for sand. I had CC and it seemed to cause more problems than it's worth. Buy some argonite sand and see if the LFS will sell you a couple of cups of sand out of one of their well established tanks or refugiums. Add it to the "dead" sand and it will seed your new sand.

what type of filter for a 90 gal

If you are planing to use LR in your 90, than all you really need is a sump/fuge and skimmer. My 90 has a 40gal sump/fuge and it works great.

    1 response will help

In my opinion there is no substitute for water changes. I do mine at least 2x a month. I look at it this way. Suppose you are locked up in the house for a long period of time and there is not way out. Your wife and kids are in there with ya. After a while the air starts to take on a life of...

    ? about closed loop system

you can use any size pump you want. It just depends on what kind of flow you want. On mine I added a SQWD and used Lok-Line to aim the flow where I wanted. I'm getting about 970 GPH out of a mag12 return from my Sump/Fuge. If all your doingis a closed loop, then your head loss will be...

    have a problem

From what I see, you need a bubble box or something to contain the overflow. On mine I just siliconed a piece of glass diagonally in the back corner. It's about an 1-1/2" from the bottom so the water flows under it. Also, I only see one baffle between the overflow area and the pump. Maybe...

    Crushed coral ???

I started out with CC and had all sorts of problems with nitrates. After doing some research, I found out that CC was the main cause for my troubles. It's a detritus trap and causes nitrates to be high. As soon as I changed over to a sand bed, no more problems with my nitrates. HTH

What to do with sump return

Well....... Since the Mag12 has a 3/4" discharge, I read that you should double that. So, I am going to use 1-1/2" SpaFlex up to the loop. I probably should use the 1-1/2 pipe for the loop, but I'm not sure if 6 1/2" ports/ outlets will be too much or not enough. To tell the truth I'm not...

    fuge lighting???

I put it in a clip-on reflector from the hardware store. Very little amount of heat. I'm not saying it doesn't get hot but it isn't a concern. On the package it reads 135W replacement and 30Wuses only. It's rated at 6500k. I bought several for around $10 ea. I snapped a quick pic of the...

What to do with sump return

I planning on using a Mag12. As far as the size of lock line, I've still got to do some figuring. Squid is helping me with this project. I was thinking on using 1/2" outlets with some spreaders but I still need to do some figuring as to the size of pipe for the main loop. I just posted the pic...
