    Shrimp Died

Do you add iodine or any suppliments containing iodine to your water? I've heard that iodine is necessary for them to moult, but not sure if it would cause them to die after a moult??? Also, were they eaten? Maybe they were killed by a crab or something when they were soft and vulnerable? [...

    D.I.Y. Saltwater Pond???

...hmmm..... and if I could raise plants in that greenhouse as well, my fiancee would approve... ;) I'm not sure we've got enough space for a greenhouse, but it's a nice dream. It's just wierd that I can't find one hobbyist that's done this. Thanks for the great info...

    PLEASE HELP ASAP!

Janice, You're going to think this ridiculous, because it is. Could the problem have anything to do with stray voltage? I know, it's ridiculous, but I can't think of anything else... maybe, you shut off pumps and turned them on during the water change... a PH finally started leaking current...

Major Algae Problem (not new setup)

OK, grasping at straws here... any chance of electrical problems? Do you have a grounding probe? What happens, when you turn all power off for just a bit? I know, it's ridiculous, perhaps idiotic, but I personally can't think of anything else. Maybe you shut off pumps, during the water...

Cat Shark Time to Outgrow 75

Thanks, Che... I'll probably hold off on the Shark(s) until I'm coser to working out my dream of an outdoor saltwater pond. There is, however, a part of me that wanted a shark or two growing fast enough to make me get off my duff and bring that dream to reality sooner, rather than later.

    garlic n' vinegar

Also, GNC and other health food stores often have garlic extract. I think the big brand is Kyolix and it's about $9.00 a bottle.

    EcoSystem 2410 Feedback

Tonga, Thanks for the reply! It sounds like you've got a great thing going on with your systems. i also like the Miracle mud, though I'm not a big fan of the EcoSystem sumps. I also guess I screwed up by adding th Caulerpa within two days... whoops, we'll see??? I'm curious as to what sort...

    D.I.Y. Saltwater Pond???

Thanks, Mr. Salty! Re: you concerns about rain, evap, pollution, etc... in the words of JFK, "We do this, that and the other thing not because they are easy, but because they are hard." So far, I've been thinking about raising the tank to solve drainage/pollution problems. Rain and evap aren't...

    Mysterious illnesses...yes plural

KDLBEM, Take some time and think about it, before you do anything drastic. This is a great hobby, but it does have it's dissapointments. I used to go crazy testing almost daily, heavy water-changes, etc. After a while, I got a little less fanatical with my tanks and they flourished. I...

Cat Shark Time to Outgrow 75

Che, Thanks for the reply. Will it really grow that fast? 3-4 months??? Has anybody on this board kept on from the yolk-dropping stage and seen growth like this?

    Refugiums

Newbie, Please don't knock refugiums as primary filtration, until you've tried it. Believe me, there are many, myself included, that feel skimmers are counter-productive for refugiums. The court is still out and I guess we're still oddballs, but there may be something to this skimmerless...

    D.I.Y. Saltwater Pond???

Does anybody out there have experience with an outdoor saltwater pond? I've had this dream of building one for years and, now that I live in an area with perfect weather for Cat/Leopard sharks (i.e. Leopards live 1/4 mi. from my door), I'd love to give it a shot. I'm guessing the pond with be...

Cat Shark Time to Outgrow 75

OK, I know that a 75 will eventually be too small for just about any shark... the question is how long will it take. Does anyone know how long it will take a 4" Cat Shark to outgrow a 75? I'm dreaming of a saltwater pond... yes, saltwater pond. This has been my dream for about 5 years now...

Sump size for 90 gal tank

As a point of reference, I'm using a 40 gal aquariumk as a sump in my 100 gal. As that's a DSB with skimmer system, I just sit the 40 gal tank below my 100 gal and place my EuroReef skimmer in it. I am, however, in the process of converting that system over to a refugium. Aside from the...

Sump size for 90 gal tank

Don't know about Del Rey, but you should make sure that your sump has enough capacity for your tank.... i.e. "Room for error." Make sure that, with a 90 gallon tank, the sump has at least.... 8 gallons of play. This means that there are at least 8 or so gallons between the sum being at the...

    EcoSystem 2410 Feedback

Update! OK, I made the mistake of going 2-3 days without monitoring the water level in my EcoSystem 2410 tank... result, I burned out my return pump. Boy, this really ticks me off. On my homemade sump Berlin system, I've got about two weeks of slack... maybe more. This is great for...

Opinions Welcome on a 55 FOWLR

Hmmmm... just a few suggestions to be taken with a grain of salt: -Lose the aragonite, if it's the large crushed-coral variety... go with all live sand, Home Depot PLay Sand, etc. -I've heard from lots of people that Flame Hawks will eventually eat shrimp. I had one with a cleaner shrimp for ~...

    Disease treatment

Trey, I'm sure you think me the garlic nut, but it's one of the few things I have enough experience with to give qualified advice on... so, here goes. Downsides # 2, 3, 4 and 5 can probably be attributed to using oil-based vs. water-based extract. Having used both numerous times on my tanks...
