PC vs. VHO whats the difference?

Those 20K bulbs rock. I have two 175watt MH 20K's and I love 'em. Slow growth though... Before I had two of the 20K's I was using a 6k bulb from a freshwater tank as a filler 'till I got the other 20K, that side of the tank exploded with coraline and my SPS shot out. But everything looks brown...

PC vs. VHO whats the difference?

If you are running MH as your primary light source I would opt for the PC. They put off less heat and draw less power. Bulbs should last a little longer (although they are a little more expensive to replace) and the ballasts for PC are a little cheaper (at least where I am getting them). Plus...

    Alkalinity

No, not exactly. Organic phosphates find there way into the tank in my differnt ways. True, however when using R/O water your phospahte problem is considerably reduced. Also if your pH stays above 8.4 phosphates remain in a form that in relativly inert and not a problem. If you see an algae...

How do you fund your hobby???

Im a LFS employee. I don't know if that is taboo or something in this forum. I have only read a few others posting-people who are also LFS employee's. Well I am not promothing them anyway. Really I work there for the discount which makes maintaining my 55gal/30gal sump/refugium and 29gal/10gal...

    Lights

That lighting would be just fine for the corals you mentioned. Keep a close eye on them, supplement with an occasional Invert food, and make sure you have plenty of LR.

    Ammonia spike

Using cured live rock and aragalive sand kind of side steps some of the cycling process. Because your cured LR comes with an established bacterial base you may not have a large ammonia spike. Espcially if you have not added anything except LR and LS.

    New-b needs help

Bare bottom tanks are okay, but live rock is essential. The two usually work in tandem, breaking down organic waste and eventually converting it nitrates, a process you should know from your freshwater dealings. A deep sand bed can give you anaerobic bacteria that is very helpful in the final...

How long has your tank been setup? and what kind of lighting do you have on it? What exact type of corals have you lost?

    Tattoo

I find the expeirence liberating. I have about 20 differnt tats on my right arm and shoulder. I would agree with hot, that it has to be something meaningful. Also, throughly research your tat artist. I have seen some pretty ugly biffs... And that is a very long lasting biff. My first I got when...

Interested in starting a nano reef

I have just been posting on the new hobbyist and the aquarium threads. I don't want to wade into the waters of the real heavy threads yet. I feel like I have to cut my teeth here, so people value what I have to say. I dont want to come off as holier-than-thou. Plus I only post in the morning...

Interested in starting a nano reef

The nano line of tanks are not exclusive to the term nano tank. DIY'ing is a better way to learn as you go, understanding the why's and why not's at each point of equipment purchase and setup saves headaches later on. I would also strongly advise the largest tank you budget and space afford...
