Go with magnetic or Electronic Ballast?

I would suggest going to this webpage and taking a look at this guy's research. More importantly it is independent research, he's not trying to sell you anything. He's a hobbiest just like us, trying to see which item works best. You'll see with his research, that most of the time you get more...

Go with magnetic or Electronic Ballast?

A 400 watt ballast uses approximately 400 watts. It doesn't matter if it's electronic or magnetic. Typically magnetic ballasts use slightly more electricity, but in return you get a little more intense light. So, in a sense you're right they do use more power, but not because they are less...

    hitchhiker ID

Can you get a closer pic? It looks like it could be a detrimental type that actually feeds on leathers and similar corals. If your leather closed up on it it might be because it was reacting to being eaten. Good luck.

NOt Sure if skimmer is working?!

Give it some time to break in. Sometimes they won't produce anything for a week or two. They just need to break down the chemicals involved in the manufacturing process. Bdubbya

    Alternative for Metal Halide?

Saltfan, I have to disagree with you. Magnetic ballast don't suck . If something breaks down on them you can easily take them apart and replace the defective part. If an electronic ballast quits working you can try changing the fuse, if that doesn't fix it then you will probably have to replace...

Berlin Turbo Protein Skimmers. Any comments on this one?

It's hard to say if you should try a different pump if I don't know how many gph your current pump is. The closer your gph is to 700 or 800 gph the more efficient the nautilus will be. XHappyX look into an ocean runner 2700 this pump has a needlewheel impeller supposed to be a good pump. Good luck.

What pump are you using to run your Nautilus TE? I use one and always get a good dark skimmate. I use a Mag7.

    Sea Lilly

That looks like a feather star. It is virtually impossible to keep and almost always die of starvation. Look up crinoid in the search feature or google it that should give you some info. Just recently there was a thread about starfish that was done by Ophiura (she has a degree in marine biology...

what is happening to my clam?

What kind of lighting do you have? I would probably just move it closer to the lights. Usually when they start getting darker that means they aren't getting enough light. Good luck.

    Excalibur skimmer

Yeah, they are decent skimmers. Better than some of the others out there, that's for sure. When I had mine it worked well as long as I kept it clean. For some reason my venturi would clog with salt creep very easily. Good luck.

Looks like a Lobophyllia hemprichii to me or maybe a Lobophyllia corymbosa, but definately a lobo of some sort.

    Pics of my new 150.

Fishieness, as long as your tank is stable and you've got the proper lighting over your tank, I'd say go for it. Green slimers are pretty hardy, as far as sps go.... When I started my tank I used rock from my 75 and 58 gallon tanks. My tank had coral in it after the first week and I added fish...

    Pics of my new 150.

I've thought about adding sand, but there are a couple of things holding me back. The biggest for me is that it is an acrylic tank and I don't want to accidentally get a piece of sand in between the mag-float and tank. And as of right now I have around 6000 gph of circulation in my tank, it...

Stuff on my rock??? ID Anyone???

It looks like it is probably lobophora sp. Sometimes naso tangs will eat it, but you also have to consider how big they can get, so a tank well over 100gal is neaded. Good luck.

    Pics of my new 150.

Just wanted to share some pics of my relatively new tank. It's been set up for around 5 months, and is doing fairly well. I've had a few temperature issues that caused a few acros to start bleaching, but most have recovered very well. I have 2-400 watt 14k MH. And one 400 watt 20k HQI. I have a...

Make the bubble coulmn a little lower in the skimmer. That way you will get a drier foam. The drier foam should look darker and have a stronger smell. Good luck.
