what to use for top off?

RO/DI all the way. Used tap when my RO broke a while back and regretted not immideatley replacing it with a new one. Fought a new algae outbreak for three months in a 1.5 year old tank... RO/DI all the way. Expensive at first but well worth it in the long run. Don't skimp on the cost when it...

    Ammonia gone amok

May be a good idea to post the specs of your tank (size/equipment/substrate/biofilter) to get a better idea of what may be causing this. How long has the tank been setup?

    Help

From your first post it seems that you have fish that have been in the tank for three months doing fine? Is that correct?

    skimmer question

I wouldn't worry about running it 24/7. IMO the more gunk it clears outa your tank the better! :D

    Red and Green Algea

May want to consider adding a couple of pounds of live rock to help balance things out. Read up about live rock first to make sure you understand it. Get a test kit as well so you can monitor Nitrate / PH / Ammonia. Replace the bulbs in your lighting, after a year they may be loosing some of...

    should i get a powerhead?

If you just have the cannister for water flow then yes get a powerhead. MaxiJet 900's sound about right for a 60. At least two for the tank.

semi simple question? ( i think)

    Switch from CC to LS

Looks like you are on the right track.. a word of advice: save some of your old substrate! put it in a nylon stocking or filter bag and put it back in your tank for a little while... it'll help seed the new sand. I didn't do this and wish I had when I switched over. HTH. Cheers!

How do you keep the sand off....

The baster works really well for me.. also if you have a really big problem area buy a lower power PH and point it at the rock so it won't allow the sand to collect there. My clarkii is a friggin engineer and digs all the time... sand EVERYWHERE. HTH.

starting over - cycle w/dead shrimp?

IMO I would use LR to kickstart your cycle... you do not need special lighting to keep LR but stronger lighting will encourage coraline and other nice things to grow. Dead shrimp can also be used, you just need something to stimulate the ammonia/trite/trate cycle and a decaying piece of shrimp...

    new tank, filtration??

Agreed w/ everything Kipass said (as usual:) ) If you want to (in the future) go w/ a reef setup I would invest the time/money in getting a decent sump/refuge going... it'll save you sooo much hassle in the long run. The sump/refuge can be any size that'll fit under your tank... but IMO the...
