    Is this sand OK??

Ill take Bang's advice and try it in the glass of water. None of it is in my tank yet, and it was only $3 for a 50 lb bag so no loss.

    Is this sand OK??

I already have 40 lbs LS in my tank, but I want to deepen my bed about an inch so I bought some play sand from Home Depot, brand name Quercete. Will this be ok to add, or should I get a different kind?

    Needing Help with Lighting!!!!

I am trying to decide what kind of lights to get for a reef tank as I am looking to upgrade my FOWLR. I am very interested in MH lighting, however it seems extremely expensive. I only have a 29 gal tank, and I was wondering what type of MH people suggest. A brand new canopy setup is way too...

    beginner with 29 gallon aquarium

If you are worried about the sunlight hurting your tank it will depend on how severe it is and how many hours a day it will be shining on it. Put your tank in the spot you want, unfilled and see how long the sun hits it. If it is for a significant amount of time you may want to reconsider, or...

    Live Rock

From what i hear getting copper out of a tank is nearly impossible, as even trace amounts will kill inverts. You may want to consider just getting a new tank before you put alot of money into the one you currently have, just to be on the safe side.

    Tell me about protein skimmers

Hiddenicon, I have a 29 gal and use the Aqua C Remora. Its expensive but worth they money, it works extremely well and in the long run pays for itself. (with the powerhead around $180).

    How soon????????

Do a search for how to cure live rock....there are a ton of posts on it. Long story short, you need a tub of some sort to put it in, a heater and a powerhead, and of course saltwater. It usually takes 1-2 weeks depending on the amount of die off.

    Water change

It depens on how much you are topping off (which relates to tank size). If you have a small tank or are just topping off a little bit, I personally would not worry about it. However, as with anything in this hobby, keeping steady levels greatly helps the situation. If you have the time and...

what to do with this tank

Because I am in the same boat as you (looking to upgrade to reef) you need to list what equipment you are currently running (ie skimmers, pumps, lights, heaters ect) and what type of fuge/sump (if any) you have. This will help others get info to you faster.

    MH - Comparisons and Questions

So I'd like to get MH lights for my tank (29g FOWLR 8 months old, 2 tom clowns, 1 firefish, cleaner shrimp, assorted crabs/snails) that I am hoping to upgrade to a reef fairly soon. I have been doing research on what MH lights entail, and am slightly confused, more about prices and options than...

    Fuge required for Reef??

Right now I only have 2 tomato clowns and a firefish. I will add fish at the very end, since I am spending the bulk of my expenses on equipment right now. I am currently looking into MH lighting, but I figured I should ask about the fuge as well. Can't you get some that hang half in the tank and...

    Fuge required for Reef??

I am currently upgrading my 29g FOWLR to a reef and I was wondering if it is necessary to have a fuge to be successful. I will probably end up adding a fuge at some point anyway, but I wanted to know if it is better to just do it from the start. Also, what is involved with building your own...

    New tank...(75gallon FO)

The live rock would be a good way to help your cycle. I would wait at least 2 weeks after your levels are normal to put any fish in, at the very least.

    Newbie disease help pls

Agreed, the live rock/sand is only meant to be put in to start the cycle of the QT. Once it is ready for fish, put it back in your display. Also, do as Lionfish suggests and put a blue or black background on the bottom and back of your tank (you can even do the sides if you wish).

    Advice for New Lights

Thanks for the info, yeah I definately planned on replacing the hood (I do have another empty 29 gal tank for future plans that I can use it with). How much would the setup you described cost? I was leaning toward the MH myself.

    Advice for New Lights

I currently run a 30 gal FOWLR but I am looking to upgrade to reef very soon. I still have the origional Florencent lights that came with my tank. What kind of lighting will allow me to do most types of corals and inverts. I would rather pay a little extra now than have to upgrade again later...

    Stawberry psuedo

If you really like your damsels, then you can probably only keep other damsels in there. They are highly agressive and will more than likely exhast to death any other fish you try to add. If you want to add different fish, you are gonna have to get rid of the damsels. Basically, its one or the...
