The dogs (plural) growled at him... in his own home. This is completely unacceptable. Momma's defensive little lap dog? Understandable. They're kind of weird that way. Pit Bull Terrier and Great Dane? Not acceptable... not at all. The only dog I've ever owned that showed aggression towards me...

    Sump/Return Pump Question

I have 5 pumps in the return chamber of my refugium. All five pumps are Danner Supreme Classics... Mag-Drive 12, 7, (2x) 3, and a 2. My tanks temps run consistently between 79-80F. My heaters kick on quite regularly to maintain those temps since I keep the house at 71F during the day, and 69F at...

Need Cheap Light Recommendation to Grow Coral

I don't think you'll have much luck using only two color spectrum LED's. I tried that color combo, and it didn't grow anything except algae. The corals you listed will do much better with a full spectum lighting system. This (single) light should be plenty for your tank, and will provide the the...

    Back to basics- 29g adventure

Sorry to see that happen, but sometimes life gets in the way of our hobbies. I think they call it "priorities", or something like that. Take care of your family, and when the time comes, jump back in. But yeah... you have to keep tabs on what's going on around here. That part's free... lol!!!

    Back to basics- 29g adventure

Cold temperature and high pressure can actually cause dissolution of calcium carbonate. It happens in the depths of the oceans all the time. Just thought I'd throw that in... lol!

    Back to basics- 29g adventure

That's what I was going to say...except in reverse. Molecules move faster in hot water, but for some reason, calcium carbonate forms faster in hot water. Heat is definitely a contributing factor, as anyone who has experienced precipitation knows that it tends to form on heaters and pumps...

    Back to basics- 29g adventure

Never a loss when that happens. My wife has a monti in her tank now, for the same reason. A broken corals means new a frag... lol! Not trying to rub it in, but my wife bought me a $50 gift card for my birthday, so I used it and $63 of my own money, to order a couple of frags last week. Since I...

Can a Tang be in a 10 gallon aquarium?

I hate to say this, but you and the poster of that video are crazy. That was NOT an 8 year old tang. It barely took up any room in the tank, so I'm guessing it was a very young juvenile. An 8 year old tang is going to be at least 5"-6" long, and unless that tank was 24" long, it was a totally...

    divorce

My wife has two dogs that adore her. They cuddle with her on the couch, and she gives them hugs and kisses all the time. Sometimes I'm a bit jealous, but she also makes time for me, so I'm okay with that. At the same time, she knows full well that if either of the dogs growled at me... or her...

Woke up and some fish had died.

I'd do a series of water changes just to be on the safe side. I don't think having your water your water too clean is a bad thing for a fish-only tank... ;)

Woke up and some fish had died.

If you stirred the sand, it's possible that you released hydrogen sulfate into the water column. There is usually an odor associated with the release, but if you weren't there long after stirring, and stayed away long enough for it to be released into the atmosphere, you may not have noticed it...

    Trump tax plan

I like Rand, but like you said... not a snowball's chance in hell. I like Rubio and Carson, and they're both gaining ground since the debate. I wish Trump would just go away. It's so disgusting to watch him, just like the speech he gave in Des Moine, IO trying to win over evangelical voters. You...

I'm entering the saltwater hobby need advice please

ORA = Oceans, Reefs, and Aquariums. They are the largest breeder or marine fish, so their fish are trained to eat prepared food before being sold.. unlike wild-caught fish that might or might not eat prepared food. ORA is also the largest producer of cultured corals and invertebrates. Supply...

    Blue Eye Golden Midas Blenny

Carnivores... their preferred diet is meat. They do well in medium-to-large size tanks due to larger territories and crustaceans to pick off the rocks. Can be a bit aggressive towards smaller fish in smaller tanks.

The Reef Crystal pail makes 160 gallons at 1.021 SG. This is an estimate, as higher salinity will result in few gallons per pail. I don't recommend 1.021 SG. 1.023 is a nice average salinity for most marine fish.

    Powerhead advice

I run two 800 gph power heads in my 40B, also. Ditto on fish loving the flow... :D It may take a little while for them to adjust to the higher flow, but your fish will love it. It's healthier for the tank, as well as giving fish the exercise they need. Reefs aren't exactly calm...

How do you know your tank is ready for a clam?

I wish I'd been around when that question was asked. I would have said, "Put a clam in the tank. If it lives, the tank is ready. If it dies, the tank isn't ready." :p

Yes. SG is an abbreviation for Specific Gravity. Another measure of salinity is PPT (Parts Per Thousand). The average oceans salinity is 1.025 SG, or 35 PPT. Yet another measure is percentage, where the average of ocean water is 3.5% salt. You will most often hear the first two terms, SG or...

    Coral help!

Sometimes it takes awhile for our convos to come full circle. LOL! That's the beauty of these discussions... a lot of topic material gets covered in the process. I'm sure that some of these posts can make reader's heads want to explode, but some of this information may actually stick to memory...
