    Robs Nano Reef

I'm back in the hobby. I graduated college and started working full time as a taxidermist. Now that I have money and time, it's nice to have a hobby again.

    Your one peice of advice?

Read a few good books first and then fill in the gaps with opinions of experienced reefers.

Lol. To each their own. I don't have room for a quarantine, nor the motivation or money to maintain one. It's a risk, but hey- I've only had two fish die from ich in nine years, so I'm doing pretty good.

    Current USA orbit marine

Even though I know that Reefbreeders is a chinese LED, I still like the two year USA warranty.

I personally like to take my inverts and corals and float them in the bag for 15 minutes and then I take a knife and poke a hole in the side of the bag once every 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the critter. For fish, I drip acclimate because I don't want the bag water in my display.

Nostalgia... Cause sometimes it's the little things.

Abalone shells aren't mother of pearl are they? I thought mother of pearl came from a certain type of oyster?

    What do you do when..

Beware that the full Apex units ($500) don't come with the pH probe. You should shop around and see your best deal. It's like having a computer monitor your tank. Heck, you can even monitor and control it from your phone while your on vacation. You also have to have a computer to fully access...

    What do you do when..

I have an apex on my system. I like it a lot. I control my lights, my heater/temp and I have a feed cycle on my return pump. If the temp gets too hot, it not only cuts off the heater but also the lights. I have to hook it up to the Internet and update the firmware, but straight out of the box...

Nostalgia... Cause sometimes it's the little things.

I've never eaten abalone before, but I know they have some really pretty shells. I use them as inlays in different ornate wood projects.

4 gallon NUVO pico reef diary

Congrats on the new tank. I don't personally think you should take the risk of keeping too many rare creatures in a 4g tank. That is bananas. I hope it all works out. Looking forward to the build. Congrats on your money and stability!

First sps think doing ok ?

Looks good. I don't see any signs of STN or RTN. From the photos, I don't see any redbugs or AEFW that are obvious. Did you dip your corals before adding them to the tank? Congrats on the wild SPS. Sometimes those end up being some of the most colorful ones over time if you keep your nutrients...

    Peppermint shrimp

Caution comes from misidentification at the retailer or wholesaler. Occasionally camelback shrimp are sold as peppermint shrimp and can wreak havoc on corals. If it's really a peppermint (98% possible), it will eat the aiptasia and any leftover food stuffs.

    55g Sump/Refuge Design help.

Hi there! With a 55g being such a nice size for a sump, I suggest making one side a refugium and the other side a skimmer section and the middle a return pump chamber. That way, you can have a lot more volume in the refugium than just 8" tall. Are you going to have an auto top off unit?

    best test kit?

I think Elos sells one. I can't verify its accuracy. I also think it's over a hundred, if they even sell it anymore.

    best test kit?

If your in the initial stages of cycling and you want to know ammonia and nitrite, API is fine. Once the tank is cycled, there are biological indicators of what your nitrate and phosphate levels are- such as green film, hair algae and macro algaes all growing. Algae takes up the nutrients in...

    best test kit?

I use my live fish store for basics. I am fixing to buy a pocket pH probe- they are under $20 on Amazon and last a long time. I use Seachem for calcium, alkalinity and magnesium. As time goes on, if I deem it necessary, I might buy a Hanna checker for phosphate. Test kits are investments...
