    New SWA w/ questions

Well first off, yes you definitely need a clean up crew. Secondly the amount of your GPH depends on the size of your tank which is 75. Are you going to have a fish only tank? or are you going to add corals? If you are going with fish only, then you will need to circulate your water 10 times an...

    Any Good Books???

My 2 favorites are "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist" by Robert M.Fenner and "The Complete Book Of The Marine Aquarium" by Vinvent B. Hargraves. Both books have a lot of useful and helpful information. When it comes to books, go to your local library. Most people seem to forget about the...

    wow did i meesss up

I dont think the brand matters, just make sure you buy a titanium heater. The metal will never break on you like glass will. Also, put a ball balve in your return line, that way you can adjust the flow of your return.

    should I add snails

You should definitely add some snails. You will be surprised at how fast they will clean your glass.

    dead snails

The rest of the clean up crew will take care of the dead snails provided you have a clean up crew. Do you have any hermit crabs in your tank? If not then by all means get some. They will dispose of the meat of the snails and use their shell as a new home if it is bigger then the one they are in now.

When is it OK to put a Starfish in a tank?

When you do a water change, how much water do you remove and do you vacuum the substrate when you do a change? Also how much and how often do you feed your fish? Maybe you are feeding too much and too often which could be causing your nitrate from lowering.

    My first Lineup

Get the hermit crabs and the snails. I didn't want them at first either. Aftre a while you will find yourself actually looking to see if you can find them all. Besides, they are small and hardly noticeable. A crew of 6 snails are better than one snail even if he is larger. Trust me, you think...

Need to get a acouple of power strips with timers for my lights

You don't need a power strip with a surge protector in it. They are for use with electronic equipment like computers. What you should get is a power strip with a built in GFCI. That is a Ground Fault Circuit Interupter. It is for use around water. If any circuit gets wet, it will shut off...

    ???'s about Buying first fish/snails/crabs

I have a 12 gallon Nano cube. I have 18 lbs of LR in it. There are 2 Oscellaris clowns, 1 Engineer Goby, 1 Serpent star, 6 hermit crabs, 6 Astraea snails, and 1 Fidler crab in it. All are doing well. I put 3 hermits and 3 snails in before I put any fish in the tank.

Is Distilled water good for top-offs?

They say that for every gallon of water that is processed through an RO unit, 2 gallons of water goes directly down the drain. So for those who have their own Ro units, I wonder how much money they are really saving if any? I would think they are flushing a lot of money down the drain. I would...

    JEBO 2003 Protein Skimmer

Is anyone familiar with that model protein skimmer or with that brand? If so, how are they? It comes with a 528GPH pump. This is my first protein skimmer and it will be going in a 45 gallon tank with a 20 gallon sump that has about 10 gallons of water in it.

    heater/sump question

Put them both in the sump. If you have good circulation, and you should, then both the water in the sump and the water in the tank willl be the same temperature. Just be sure to keep the thermometer in the tank.

Expert Advice Needed on Sump Building.

A sump is basically a filter where you get to hide all you extra eqipment such as heaters, protein skimmers and the like. You can also have a refugiom in it where you can let algae grow which will help control your nitrates. Also, in theory, by having a sump, your system is actually bigger. I...

    3 clownfish died

What else do you have in the tank? There could be something stressing your clownfish. I had a Domino damsel that would harass everything in my tank and causing them to die on me, so he went back to the LFS.

What do you use for water changes?

Every Saturday I stop at the LFS and get 5 gallons of RO water. I use a 5 gallon water bottle. I then mix up the water and let it age until the next Saturday. On Saturdays I vacuum the bottom of my tank removing 5 gallons of water. I then use the drip method to put the fresh water(which has aged...

    Glass Amenome Problem

Everyone is against Aipstasia but I kind of like the way it looks. You can always ship the rock to me. :D I am told that the Raccoon and Copperband butterfly fishes will eat the Aipstasia, so I plan on getting one of each to keep the Aipstasia in check. I have also heard of somthing called Joes...

    Any ideas what it was?

I was looking ay my tank the other night, when all of a suddden something darted out of a hole in my LR and into another hole. It happened so quickly that I didn't get a very good lok at it. It was maybe an eighth of an inch wide and about five eighths to three quarters of an inch long. It was a...
