Super Glue Gel is safe. In a short time it should get overgrown with coraline algae so you won't see the white. The other thing you can use is a coral colored epoxy from Two Little Fishes. However, this stuff does not hold as well as super glue.

Sponges are good they clean the water of excess organics which you must have in quantity if your lucky enough to have sponges. Sponges also take a long time to show up in an aquarium which is why you're seeing them now. h*
