    electric bill - please help

calirob.... :notsure: thats scary.... Go buy one of those plug in the wall watt/voltage/amp meter thingys... i think wally world sells them... Idk what your total household load is but to have it run that much faster just from turning on lights & a pump doesnt sound quite right.

    electric bill - please help

PF.... Your right it was a little excessive to say double. Still they are more inefficient than electronic. I cant seem to find the ballast i was looking at before but it must have been an industrial one with a reall low Power Factor.

    electric bill - please help

I say looks like because of the relative size. The transformers for the Core & coil are larger... I dont know for sure...

    electric bill - please help

yes. every time you convert elctricity there is the potential for loss. It looks like that is an electronic ballast and that is far more efficient. Core & coil ballasts are horribly inefficient and can use almost double the wattage of the bulb you are trying to light. Those are HQI bulbs and...

    electric bill - please help

if your ballast is big and heavy its a core&coil (it will probably humm a little when its on an they get prertty warm too). Electronic ballasts are silent and run much cooler, They are also much smaller. It will probably be like 2"x3"x6" or so. Yes it probably could jump that much if your...

    Lighting from Home Depot?

no, the closest your gona come is the PLL type bulbs. The highest wattage they sell at HD is 26 watts though i think. I went in one time and asked about 96 watters adn they looked at me like i had 5 heads. I even went to an electrical supply house and they had never heard of anything over 26...

    Lighting from Home Depot?

no, the sockets arent an exact match but they can be swapped out for proper MH sockets. I saw a thread on another forum (cant remember which one now) that had details and pictures of how they did it for 150 watt HQIs. They used a Reagent (sp?) brand outdoor flood light and modified the sockets...

    electric bill - please help

Last post is correct but if your using core & coil ballasts or tar ballasts your wattage is actually alot higher because they are inefficient. If your using electronic its not too bad for a 150 watt bulb i think they use like 168 watts (at least the ones i have do) and the core & coil will use...

Is lava rock ok to use as a base rock

Depends on the composition, and if you bought it/found it then there is no way to know for sure whats in it( unless it was sold specifically for an aquarium).... There is the possibility for toxic metals or gasses to be trapped in the rock and they can leech into the tank. I wouldnt use it if it...

Looks goog to me too.... Just one question though... (no bashing) the RO water looks a little cloudy. It may just be the glass/light. Did you rinse the tank good before you set it up? Usually the water would look crystal clear.
