Is there something wrong with my tank?

8.8 is pretty high pH. You want to get that down to about 8.3 or so. Check your calcium and alkalinity readings as high (or low) pH can drastically affect them. Do a search on the relationship between the three for some good reading.

    toothpick method

Push a toothpic through the base of the colt coral with a little bit of flesh below it so it won't rip through. Use a rubber band to attach each end of the toothpick by wrapping it around the rock you would like to attach it to. Be sure you only loosely wrap the rubber bands or the toothpick...

    Aggressive Psuedo-Reef?

Before anyone gets up in arms, I do know the dangers of having these fish with the other inhabitants. I have been in the hobby for 5+ years and have kept these fish before. What happened was, the money cowrie, xenia, and mushrooms came as hitchhikers on my rock. After all was cycled and fish...

Whats the most important "thing" you've learned

Water + Power Strips = Bad Don't let drunk people near the tank. It is easier to do good maintainance from the beginning that try to fix a situation like red slime or hair algae. Do no go to a LFS just to look if you don't have the money to buy. Do not add fish or corals until you are...

    Cleaner Shrimp?

Has anyone ever tried to keep one of these with aggressive fish (usual shrimp munchers)? Would the symbiotic tendency override the desire for a snack?

    Hydor FLO Rotating Deflector

I have one on a maxijet 1200 in my 72 and I like it. Beware that they do reduce the flow rating on the powerhead that you put it on. However it does give a nice flow motion through the tank.

    Any Wine Conneseurs Out There???

I will be honest... I didn't read everyone's recommendations. However, I have studied in France for three months and also been to another 3 week trip to Italy. My favorite grapes are pinot pinoir and cabernet souveignoin (for the record, I just drank a bottle of Pinor Noir as did the SHMBO...

    Planet Earth: Shallow Seas

skirrby: Just got my DVR Saturday but already have four episodes. My favorite part was the super fast video of the coral opening up and feeding. Amazing. Makes me second guess only having a nano and my large tank being aggressive.

    3 Gallon Picotope

I have a picotope also. I am running a 24W Odyssea as well as the 9W stock lighting. On the back I have an AC30 and the stock picofilter for flow and circulation. I have a hydor 7.5W heater that keeps the tank between 74-78. As some of the others said, evaporation is a huge issue. I topoff...

    Broken T-5 ballast

I inherited an Aqua-Medic 4 x 54W T-5 fixture when I bought my tank. The fixture is great other than the fact that one of the bulbs doesn't fire. I replaced the bulb thinking it had burned out but that did not solve the problem. The ballast is obviously faulty. How do I go about fixing or...

    sapphire nano skimmers

Yes, mine is on the bottom of the first chamber. The trick is to set the surface skimmer to make it where the water in the back is just below the inlet of the third chamber. The guy designed the skimmer to work at maximum capacity at this water level. Good luck and happy skimming.

    sapphire nano skimmers

I had the same problem as you did until I messed with the surface skimmer attachment on the in flow to the back. Tone down the flow and it wont flow over the skimmer. I empty mine about twice a week with a full box. Enjoy your skimmer.

    Trigger stuck in overflow... help!

Okay, so somehow my trigger decided to jump and landed in the overflow. It is a standard all-glass back wall 72bow overflow so there is not much room. It makes it especially difficult when the trigger wedges in behind the durso pipe at the bottom. I have tried using a net to get him but he is...

    sapphire nano skimmers

I have one in my NC 24DX. It fits perfectly without modification. It is definately audible but is also a good little skimmer for its size. It generally pulls out tea colored wet skimmate, not dry stuff. I hope you like it. I think it was worth the money.

    Meet Godzilla the Strawberry Hermit

I just can't see a 3 inch trigger getting this guy. Maybe the other way around. The LFS I got him from had pulled him out of all of the tanks throughout the store and put him by himself in the display 150 up front because he kept killing his tankmates. He is a little bigger than a baseball I...

    Meet Godzilla the Strawberry Hermit

Haha, not in a reef RFB. Aggressive FOWLR is where he is. I have two other reefs to keep that bug satisfied.
