Toadstool Retracting its tentacles??? Please Help

More information is needed. What size tank? what are inhabitants? Depending on what your parimeters are it definately looks like you need a lot more lights. I'm not sure what K value or PAR your normal flourescents are but I feel like you don't have near enough light for corals at this time...

is plastic frame important on tank?

By holesaw it is meant either a carbide tipped hole saw or a diamond hole saw. I hope I didn't offend anyone here but it will take either of these, with water as a "coolant/lubricant". And as stated let the saw do the work. Go very slowly letting the weight of the saw be the only weight on the...

    Motivation for starting SW...??

I agree with cresh1966, I had a 55 gallon about 20 years ago when, if you had one piece of live rock you were really doing something. It was for decoration not filteration, alot has changed in the way of information from then, I think that is why it was so hard to get things to live back then...

    Chemi-Pure = No water changes?

Like Thomas said Chemi-Pure is a bag of Charcoal with some other ingredients. Yes, you will still have to do water changes to replace trace elements etc. Chemi-Pure doesn't.

I have a peppermint shrimp and he doesn't even know what Aiptasia is!!!! He just sits back and waits until it's feeding time and out he comes..ready to eat, only not what I want him to eat. Don't worry about what he will eat once the Aiptasia is gone he will survive!

    Pulsating Xenia

Ah, the age old question "what makes a xenia pulse, or not?" No one knows what causes them to do so and no one knows why they don't. In Eric Borneman's book he touches on the same phenomonen. But still no one knows......

    Xenia question

It's not a hijack if it helps.......Yeah, I use the boiling water to kill out aiptasia also. It's funny, I had a big one in the middle of my xenia too. One thing I've found out about them is the water doesn't have to go into the mouth of the Aiptasia, I have stuck the syringe tip down into...

    Xenia question

Can Green star polyps touch Xenia? I mean are they compatible? I have one close to a Xenia (close enough they're touching) and the Xenia seems to be turning white at the base. I had a Galexa sp? kill a xenia once and was wondering about these? :help:

    Is this Aiptasia?

The shrimp will be ok, I don't think mine eats any of the aiptasia...He sure comes out when it's feeding time though..The boiling water works great. Be sure to look for others.

    Used Tank Question

Yeah you guys are right. But sometimes you have to live with your decisions right or wrong. And sometimes wrong (in your wifes eyes) is way wrong I sure am coming close though. I think it would make an awsome reef...

    xenias

There are several remedies for Aptasia. One is Joe's Juice, a commercial product to get rid of them, Another is a strong Kalk solution (Calcium Carbonate) but you have to get the solution down their throat so to speak, and if you so much as touch them they retract. My own personal experience...

    Prizm skimmers

You are going to get a lot of pro's and con's on this. I have a prizim on my 75 gallon that has been there over a year and a half. I had to replace the pump after about a year. In the interim I bought a Seaclone 100. that one I didn't like. The prizim is imo a decent skimmer for the price...

    Best Tests?

Do a search for them. There are a lot of monitors that will monitor the levels of PH, Calcium, Salinity, etc. They are a bit pricey. Pinpoint is one that comes to mind. These are electronic ones.

Can I Still Save This Coral?

Do you have it close to a Galaxea do you? I lost a Xenia that way..they can have sweeper tentacles that are 6 to 8" And they usually sting what ever is close. Just a thought, My Xenia turned white at the base then by the time I was aware of the problem it was too late.

    Yet another clam ID

Hey Bang Guy, Do you just do the kalk drip (or kalk top off)? Would you consider the reactor or is that just a waste of money if the drip is working? Your opinion... Thanks, Carl
