    ballast's

Magnetic ballasts heat your water much more than electronic ballasts, especially HQI ballasts. That was the primary reason I went with IC ballasts for my halides. Google: cnidarianreef mh Than look at---Lamp heat due to ballasts

why do auto topoffs have to be electric??

WattsUpDoc, I noticed in your second pic you extended the length of your adjustable float valve. Could tell me what exactly you used to do that. I would like to add about a inch to mine.

    Icecap Ballast Dilema?

Don't cut it. I assume you also bought the PFO adapter(male). All you have to do is take the three screws out of the adapter to open it up. Then you will see the three leads with screws mounted to each one. The top(center) is the ground(green). Between the other two leads, the hot and...

    Refugium Set-Up?

The main thing about the skimmer chamber that matters is that it recieves raw tank water, completely unfiltered and to make sure it does not keep recycling the same the water it just processed. IMO and expericences algae scrubbers(using chaeto as the macro) do much better under higher turnover...

    Refugium Set-Up?

Looks perfect to me. Originally Posted by ameno , also it's better not the skimmer before going thru the fuge. How do you explain this? I disagree that you want less flow through a fuge, more specifically an algae scrubber.

    Is this enough light?

I would definitely go with 250's for a tank that deep, especially if you want an SPS tank. I would not worry about heat either. Don't forget the type of ballast you get plays a big part in the heat produced by your lighting. I run 2-250w MH's on my 55g along with 2 110w VHO's and my tank...

    Fuge flow?

I'm on the other end of the spectrum as reefkprZ... For those who are aware of who Anthony Calfo is, here are a few quotes from him on fuges, turnover rates, etc. ""Thus... for Chaeto in a 20 gall 'fuge... a 400gph flow (20X) is not asking a lot. Its not enough flow in many cases (like when...

Do I have to leave the light on my refugium all the time-?

Since you are using Caulerpa as your macro, you certainly should leave the lights on 24/7 if you wish to attempt to keep it from going sexual. Caulerpa however has several ill side effects I am not fond of, and that is why I use chaetomorpha. Most every other macroalgae besides certain...

    reef temp

I then asked him what temp he would say is ideal, his response: "Hmmm, good question. Well, I would say that what "ideal" is depends on what the goals are. If the goal is maximize coral growth in addition to providing a temperature that is suitable for other organisms I'd shoot for a temp. of...

    reef temp

My sps reef stays between 82-84, and I have never had a coral bleach. The following info is taken from a member of another large board who is a marine biologist. Again, not my words, but this is verbatim in which he wrote me back. I first asked him about how much the ocean temp can fluctuate...

    Tons of algae!

Mounties do ROCK . I don't think they have a weak schedule by any means though. They play 3 teams in the top 25. Definitely not the most difficult though. Louisville losing does hurt no doubt. Nov 8th will be payback. Western Maryland is nice country. The Deep Creek area is nice, but it...

    Tons of algae!

An algae scrubber is commonly mistakingly referred to as a refugium. Basically it is a seperate tank plumbed into your system, for the purpose of growing mass quantities of MACRO-algae. As the macro algae grows, it takes up nitrates and phosphates into itself. This way the micro-algae(what...

    Tons of algae!

I'd suggest getting new test kits. There is no way, you have readings of 0 for nitrate and phosphate, if you have algae. A food source must be present for algae to grow.

    Overflow box bubble!

5gph for each turn, seems very low to me. Even at that, you have to account for head height in addition to T's, 45's, and 90's. Look at the back of your pump, it should show what the pump does at various head heights. For instance, my return pump does 1050gph at 0 head height. At 4 feet it...

    Overflow box bubble!

Your flows are definitely not matched if you are getting air bubbles in the top of the U-tube. That is the only reason bubbles will accumulate in the top of a U-tube. If they were close to being matched, the bubbles would be forced all the through to the outside box, and thus never accumulate...
