would adding carbon be a good or bad choice.....

What aould be your reasoning in adding the carbon? There really isn't any harm in adding activated carbon to your filtration system. Most filtration systems have some form off carbon. It seems that you have more than adequate filtration in place. In looking at your post the thing that I have a...

    Hitchhiking flower anemone...

I had the same thing happen mself. I ordered some live rock and after a couple of days I found 5 anemones. I looked at the pictures they have here on there online store and believe mine to be a rock anemone. They say they are filter feeders, nut mine have eaten very tiny cutp pieces of shrimp...

    cycle

How much live rock are you going to add? Also what do you have for substrate? If the live rock is uncured then it will probably be sufficient to cycle the tank. I used shrimp to cycle my tank and within a couple of days my ammonia skyrocketed. Now I'm waiting for it to go down.

    live sand vs. crushed coral?

LS has more bacteria that is benificial to your tank. Also it will more than liekly have worms and other critters that are a food source as well as help break down detritus. Is this going to be a fish only tank. If not you may want to add a little more live rock. Most people add at least 1lb of...

    tang compatibility

I would probably not add the dwarf angel. If you decide later to switch to reef with corals then it could be a problem. I would also suggest just a pair of clowns. They seem to do better in pairs. If you left out the hawk then you could add some cleaner shrimp and other inverts. From the fish...

    86 degrees!

PG&E is gouging those of us in CA. Are rates almost doubled ever since our so called energy crisis. Yet I see PG&E crews working on weekends making double time on jobs they could easily be doing during the week. To put it in simle terms PG&E screwed californians. Just a couple more yrs and I'll...

    tang compatibility

In a 75 gallon i would only keep one tang that will stay somewhat small. Most tangs are not very compatible. Are you going to be doing a reef tank? What kind of color are you looking to get as far as fish? I put several small fish in my 80. most only 2-3 in. to get a good variety.

    anybody know anything about seahorses?

    86 degrees!

I'm just down the road in Merced. I installed a whole house fane and leave that running all day with the windows and screens open. My house never gets above 80 until we hit the 100's. Then I close up the house and crank on the air. You can get a hole house fan at home depot for around $150...

    Bought a 46 gallon bowfront

More than likely any shrimp that you add will become dinner for your puffer. Probably not a good idea. You could probably add some more hermits though. How much LR do you have? How long has your tank been setup?

    Mandarin scrap?

They do not mix well. Some people have had success in keeping one of each species together in the same tank, but normally they will fight to the death. I would suggest seperating them. Not sure how you can tell a male from a female.

    powderblue or brown

Depending on what other fish you have in the tank. The smallest tank for a powder blue in everything I've read is 100 gallon. The brown is a 75 gallon. The blue can be aggressive towards other tangs. I've also heard a lot of people say the blue is a little more difficult to keep. I have a naso...

    Alantic carpet anemone

Sometimes when I rearrange my tank my anemones will change rocks. You could try putting the rock in another location of the tank and see what it does. It's hard to catch them in the act of moving, and if you do they will probably grab a hold of something as soon as you touch them. I'd let him...

    do you count total gallons?

IMO you would just count the main tank. Normally when people are talking about the 1" per 5 rule the reason is so the fish can have room to move without bothering each other.
