Eclipse tank

I originally posted this under reef tanks then realized should have posted here. Currently have an 80 gallon eclpise that is finishing cycle. I have upgraded the lighting with pc retrofit. I would like to add a skimmer, but have not found one that will work with the eclipse hood unless I cut the...

    eclipse system

I am trying to decide what to do with my 80 gallon eclipse. It's close to being cycled. I've upgraded the lighting with a retrofit pc kit to bring the lighting to 110 watts. If I did the math correctly. I would like to add a skimmer but cannot seem to find one that will work unless I cut the...

    should snails go in q-tank?

I'm pretty sure the problem with putting snails in your q-tank is if you do get a sick fish that you need to do hypo or copper this could kill the snails. I know this is tru for shrimp, but not absolutly positive about snails. I would not risk it.

    Cycle Question?

Thanks for the advice. It does seem to be fast for a cycle. After I put the LS in I will throw a shrimp in and watch to see what happens.

    Just starting!

One thing about a saltwater is evrytime time you add live rock/sand you never know what your going to see grow. When I started my freshwater tank it was hard because I was staring at the same thing dayin dayout. With saltwater when you add LR/LS you find something new almost everyday. I would...

    Cycle Question?

Thanks for the reply. I figured I would wait until after I added the live sand and give it a couple of days after I add the LS and take some more readings. You know how it is, just ready to start adding new life to the tank. Take it slow. Hard to do, but better in the long run!!!

    royal gramma or not?

For quite a while I was eyeing a royal gramma at our LFS, but I thoug it was a pshedochromis, and from what I've read thay like to pick on the shrimp so i stayed away from them. Then after doing a little more research I relized that it was a Royal gramma. At 1st it's hard to tell the differance...

LFS testing your reef tank water?

IMO I think you may want to consider a new LFS. Mine will do all the tests I want at no charge. They gave me a hard time when I 1st started this hobbie because I would be in there at least twice a week to compare their readings with mine. Just my opinion.

    royal gramma or not?

I believe from what I've read the pseudochromis is more prone to pick at inverts compared to the royal gramma. Other than that they are pretty similiar in behavior. Both can become territorial and somewhat aggressive. I have a royal gramma and he's pretty cool to watch.

    Are water changes stressful??

One thing I would like to suggest as well is as you are doing your water changes add the water slowly. When I 1st started I would just dump the whole bucket into the tank. Make sure the temp, ph, & salinity are as close as possible to your main tank. Then use a powerhead to slowly add the water...

What type of LFS do you use?

I purchase as much locally as I can. There are 2 stores locally that have as good of prices or better than I've been able to find on the net as far as equipment and live products. Although I do help alot of local company's to promote themselves on the Internet I still like to be able to see what...

    Cycle Question?

I currently am cycling a new 80 gallon tank. It's been running for 2 weeks. When I setup the tank I threw some store shrimp in. Within a couple of days the ammonia was off the charts, above what my test kit could measure. Higher than 8.0 After a few days I added some LR from LFS about 50lbs. A...

    cycle? will crabs survive?snails/?

Everyone has been talking about you uncooked store shrimp to cycle the tank instead of fish or live creatures. It costs less and you will see an ammonia spike very quickly. I saw my ammonia spike of the chart within 3 days. Crabs and snails I don't believe are as hardy as the damsel.

    NITRATE QUESTION

Nitrates will go up but should stay at a low level. They shouldn't really spike just increase to a level then stay about that level. Doing minor water changes should bring these levels down. At least thats what I've found in my tank. Part of it from what I've been reasing is because of my CC...

    Clown Fish

They don't need a host. I've tried to get mine a couple of different anemones and they wont have anything to do with them. I would put them in as a pair. I've just heard they do better. Don;t really know if thats true or not. Mine seem to enjoy eachothers company. They are fun to watch. They...

    Caught Damsel in 2.7 seconds.

Congrats on the easy capture. Wish I would have thought of that when I tried to catch mine. I got frustrated and removed all live rock. What a pain.

    Added my rocks yesterday!

Half the fun when setting up a new tank is watching the live rock grow. You never know whats going to show up. I'm always finding new little critters in there and I havn't added any fish yet to my new tank. Even my established tank seems to have something new appear every couple of weeks.

would adding carbon be a good or bad choice.....

That sounds pretty high for LR. My LFS sells for $3 lb for Fiji as long as you buy 50lbs. Sells $4 lb for individual. I would save up and order online. There are a lot of reputable places online. gulfview requires a $100 minimum order, but the rock is very nice.

would adding carbon be a good or bad choice.....

How much is your LFS want for the rock. I've seen several places online that you can purchase for around $5 lb. I just purchased some from www.gulf-view.com and it was great quality. I got the more expensive stuff, but well worth the price...
