    power outages

PVC check valves would work but in my experience they failed on me after timeless practice runs so i took it out and have thus made it very simple for power outages....leave the pvc elbow(return water back into tank) near the surface helps with surface agitation and water flow so the minute the...

Skimmer help.... what am I looking for?

You have to find that happy medium, the bubbles should just be breaking the surface without pouring out, the dryer the bubbles (less water with them after breaking the surface is better) for more gunk takeout, but if you adjust it where its more water you can wet skim and that should help...

    Bak-pak questions

I have the bak pak 2 dual pump, it does the job, but like everyone else says it is a pain in the butt, it also needs messing with to really skim the tank, but yes you do need a skimmer, once you see the gunk a good skimmer takes out of your water you will realize why you cant live without...

how often do you change your filter pads?

Well you know my response ditch the bio wheel and go for the sump (wet/dry) system you will benefit more from it down the road.....2 Ph's seem ok...just place them opposites of eachother, and maybe add one more down the road for sand circulation, deitritus builds can build up fast on the surface...

    thinking about upgrading to MH's

depends on what you are going for imo, if you wanna do hard corals and clams than MH is the way to go, if you wanna just do softies (leathers, mushrooms etc, some LPS's) than you can do any PC setup as long as you have about 220+ watts... I am running 250+ watts running with PC's and have a tank...

PRIME and other reducers, DO THEY WORK??

could be from overfeeding too! The lack of LR may be whats causing the lingering ammonia levels which would be why most experts believe you should have about a 1/2lb-1lb of rock per gallon...I guess it really does help to have enough live cured rock!

Brown Coating on live rock and everything 55 gallon

also could be from lights, although 3 weeks is early and sounds like a new tank syndrome (diatoms) but if you are using old bulbs this will promote that as well....
